Are we going to say the population is killing the world? Truth be told, the poorest countries are countries with so much population. For example Ghana is richer than Nigeria not because they have good government but because the resources they have can take care of their population better. I do not say this out of a rumor I heard but based on facts I have researched. Now let’s take these facts to book. Ghana has a population of about 35 million, Nigeria has a population of about 232 million which is more than five times the population of Ghana. Ghana produces 99,000 barrels of oil per day, which isn’t even their major source of income, Whereas Nigeria produces over 1,900,000 barrels of oil per day and has little or no other source of income to feed its large population.
Now It’s clear that we are as corrupt as we are overpopulated, but then if Nigeria had Ghana’s population producing half of what we currently produce per day, we will be seen as one of the richest countries in Africa because even though our corrupt leaders are stealing from us, what is left is more than enough to provide free education, free healthcare and also subsidies the prices of goods and services making living easy for the citizens. But when Birth rate is so high that it becomes hard to circulate resources, living becomes so hard and the citizens suffer for it.
In my opinion, the first thing to do in a big way to make the Nigerian economy better is to reduce corruption to the bare minimum. The next thing to do will be to maintain a population ratio. This will help build the economy to the point where it can conveniently feed the country’s population before looking to improve in other aspects. Let’s look at it this way, A country is poor when it can not provide the basic amenities of its citizens. Amenities like healthcare, Education, and food. If citizens do not have access to these things, or the access to them is limited, then that country is poor. This is the reason why despite the fact that a country like Nigeria has all the mineral resources that would make a country rich, it is still considered as poor.
Why would a man give birth to 9 children when he knows his resources can only handle one. This has become a major problem in our country, Families are overpopulated, making the nation overpopulated, and thus making the resources available inadequate. Go to the public schools and you will see how many students are in a class. In my time, there were about 700 in just my class, with 5 form teachers overseeing us. In order to build an environment where a nation can thrive, birth control is permanent.I read in the news that America today is ready to pay its citizens to encourage them to give birth more because they have lots of resources being managed by foreigners. I guess every nation has its troubles, and must be ready to control her population and resources effectively.

The higher the population, the lesser the availability of opportunities. Our problem in Nigeria is just too much, overpopulation is there, corruption is also there, these two are like cancer and until we find a mean to get rid of them, we may continue to remain we are are as a nation.
