One of the issues I have had with some people close to me is their sweet tooth. Even though I have to buy it for them, I do not like that they take it so much. Although there was a time I also had a sweet tooth, I guess I just outgrew it. But not everyone can outgrow it. I remember a girl in my school some years back who died of kidney failure and diabetes. Prior to the time she was diagnosed with diabetes she was always drinking soda, sometimes more than two in a day. This habit made it difficult for her to stop after she was diagnosed. It was when she saw that her health kept deteriorating that she knew there was no way to cheat her body again. I think the habit of sweet tooth would not cause as much damage as it is already causing if sugar intake can be regulated. I think this idea is doable because the major reason people fall sick from too much sugar is that they don’t know what food contains more or less sugar.

For example in Nigeria, We have both natural and carbonated sugar (alongside other sugars). But when you look at most of the food we eat, cassava (garri) beans, and rice contains sugar in different forms. Now imagine someone who eats rice with coke almost every day, and this same person loves garri and beans, how much do you think the body can take before it breaks down, especially for those who eat this food and do not exercise at all. They damage their eyes, kidneys, pancreas liver, and body in general because the sugar residue in their system keeps accumulating the sugars they do not burn. I remember back then when I took a lot of sweets, I was usually in the basketball court burning them out which helped me a lot. Nowadays I only take sodas once in a while because I do not have the time to exercise like I use to.

Regulating sugar in the food we eat would help us a lot, it would make the jobs of doctors easier as they can help even the diabetic patients cheat their system and still get to eat the food they like in limited proportions that would not be detrimental to them. It would also help those very close to being diabetic watch it and know when it’s getting too much because sugar is an addiction that we do not talk about. Just as alcohol kills, sugar also does, and it is not talked about a lot of the time. Now imagine how it would be when an alcoholic person turns out to have a sweet tooth… Sometimes what makes people sick is not just what they eat, it is how much they eat it. If such a person can regulate their sugar and alcohol intake, it would help them stay healthy. Although I think medical professionals will be in the best place to teach us more about this, for now, this is all I can say.
