LITTLE LIE

Lying is bad, so we were taught growing up, this is what we also teach our kids, but the truth is that it is something we also do as humans. We are not proud of it, I for one isn’t proud of it, but sometimes it seems as the safest option because the truth can destroy as much as it can build. I am currently flipping through some episodes of Game of Thrones when I realized something… Ned Stark would probably have lived longer if he told the same lie he told for jon snow. Although Jon lived like a bastard for the majority of the season, he would have died if he learned about his true identity. Just like this series, there have been a lot of times when I got into trouble for the truth, some would find it honorable to get into trouble for the truth, To be honest I applaud their tenacity, The only issue is that this world is not fair, and it would not save you just because you choose to be honest and say the truth. This is the brutality of life, and only those who can find a way to survive can actually live long enough to tell the story. This does not mean I condone the act of lying or that I love to lie so much that I would turn a blind eye to it and would prefer the world to do so. I mean if everyone is lying, how on earth would we know the truth?

It is wrong to hide the truth, but sometimes there are things I wished I never knew. Maturity to a point is understanding that you do not need to know everything as it is, maybe part of the truth, especially if knowing the entire truth would cause more harm than good. Sometimes lying is not even the opposite of the truth, but a perversion of it. A lie could be derived from the truth, but not end at the truth and that is what a lot of people call white lie. Such lies do not look harmful and a lot of times are done with very good intentions, however just like any other lie, ones caught always have a devastating effect. One of such lies is the one we all tell when the question of “How are You” comes up. The very first thing we say is “I am fine”. Deep down we know all is not well, but as unharmful as that lie is, its effect can be very disastrous. At the end of the day, people have died because they do not want others to bear the burden that they carry even when it’s crushing them.

White lies may look harmless, but they can be very dangerous and if not carefully thought of can lead to a lot of unplanned events. This is the major issue with lying, you can not control or fully predict the outcome. The truth gives you a guilt free conscience which to be honest is far more than gold, a white lie however might save you from imminent danger, but there is no probability that it would keep you from danger. But come to think about it, there is no probability in anything. Whether truth or lie, the world is vicious and you can’t tell how things will turn out at the end of the day. It is good to have values and morals, it is also good to be smart in dealing with people. Knowing when to do one or the other is very vital for our survival.
