FACING FEAR

I’ve been working with my company for a little over 3 years now and if I am being honest it’s not been an easy ride but a growing one. When I started I knew very little, barely anything about web development and more about digital marketing. I came in as a digital marketer, but there was an urgent need for an ICT personnel because the company handling a lot of our web activities were sucking at it. They neglected a lot of security breaches until it escalated into something truly terrifying. The company lost a lot during that period, project documents and some contract records. The company needed an ICT specialist within hours and it was almost impossible to find one because even the company handling our web security had been logged out of the server. My MD being as impatient as he was asked if We knew anyone we could call and I said I could try. To be honest I did not know the gravity of the situation until he took my word for it and asked me to try.

Menh, that was the most terrifying 5 hours of my life since working with my company. At the beginning I did not even know what I was looking at, I only knew the basics of C++ and Java script and was seeing codes I had never come across before. I was a fresh graduate who thought he was a big shot and that day humbled me. Seeing I knew nothing about what I was looking at I called a friend of mine who was really good with cyber security and my situation without leaving out a single detail, thankfully it was something he understood really well and was able to guide me through some simple stuffs while I gave him the only access we had left to our server. He recovered everything and told me exactly what to tell my company sounding professional at the same time and when I did my MD decided to give me the office of ICT permanently. This was exactly how I became an ICT professional accidentally even when I knew nothing.

But then I never knew the problem was just starting, I started getting cyber threats from left right and center and every single time I would call my friend. Sometimes out of shame I would decide to do research but would end up calling him at the end of the day because one wrong move could leak the company's confidential files and emails. The threat was always behind me, it was knowing that I was standing on a thread and I knew nothing about surviving. But this pushed me to learn in conventional and unconventional ways. I learned on the job, every single time I did not know what to do I learned to get the answers, it wasn't easy because one wrong move would not just make me lose my job, but could even send me to jail. But today, It’s a different story. I am more confident, I do not still know it all, but I know enough to protect my company and for now, that is all that matters.
