EXPRESSION

When we talk about emojis and GIFs, we are not just talking about fun, we are talking about expressions, something that can truly reveal our emotions. The thing about texting is that a lot of the time it is not enough in a conversation. In the past I have had arguments with my partner because she misunderstood my text and my intentions. I am really not an emoji person, I’ve had to learn to use emojis in between texts. I do not also use Voicenotes very well, I guess I am not just a fan of my voice. This is why when texting, I have to make sure whatever I am trying to say is communicated very well and understood exactly the way I wish for it to be understood. Emojis and GIFs in a way makes this possible and I am beginning to be more frequent with how I use them.

I think the only thing I can not express through emoji is anger. Once I am angry with a person, even if it’s through text, I just tell you point blank because at that point using emoji sounds like child’s play. Maybe not everyone thinks this way, but when I am angry and trying to communicate, I do not feel there is anything other than words that will fully express how I feel. At that moment I can be blunt and inconsiderate, my words become very harsh and I become very unfiltered. Although I don’t cause, whoever I am directing the anger to would wish I caused instead. I would rather use voice notes at this point if I feel my anger is not fully expressed in my text. Apart from this, I would use emojis, especially GIFs to express other emotions. If I am disappointed and would rather stay silent or I see the words are not coming better expect a GIF.

For memes, I don’t use them very often, I read them, joke with them, and just have fun. I don't know why, but I will always see it as unserious even when I get the message very clear and even if the message is very serious. I see it this way because that was how I first knew memes to be, and to date it has stalked with me. I don’t know if I will be able to take any meme user very seriously even though I understand that they are not being funny, I guess it’s a me thing at the end of the day. I have a friend whom I have always had to apologize to because I do not take her memes seriously even when she is trying to be serious. This is not something I feel would change any time soon. I believe both memes, GIFs and emojis have different functions on the internet, while memes are for fun, GIFs express emotions in motion, while emojis express emotions in between texts. But in all, they all make the internet space feel more social.
