EXPERIENCE OVER TRAITS

Funny as this may sound when I think about it, people are born into this world with talents and abilities, but I do not believe everyone is. What a child grows up to become is not just a result of their DNA, in fact, I believe a child can only archive a maximum of 5% from DNA as the remaining 95% is cultivated from life experience. The last edition of the hive learners week 173 was about the wild, I remember comparing the animals in the wild with those that grew under the care of animal doctors and a hostile free environment. Now Imagine bringing two lions, one from the wild, and one from born and brought up in the zoo and exchanging both habitats. I would not expect the zoo lion to last very long in the wild, and I would expect the wild Lion to be very vicious and fearful in the zoo. This is because the zoo animal was handed everything, and in the wild it’s every animal for itself. Although lions, their character traits are different. The zoo Lion might be physically bigger than the wild lion, but I doubt it would have the strength and tenacity of the wild lion. If another animal doesn’t kill the zoo lion in the wild, it could die of hunger, starvation, or infection which is something the wild lion lives with everyday.

Now looking at humans, and the traits we exhibit, I have come to learn from my relationship that my partner and I are two distinct people with different character traits. We might learn to live with each other, but we both do things and make decisions based on the kind of environment we grew up in. For example, I have mastered ignoring people and avoiding trouble by keeping shut, while my partner sometimes doesn’t even understand when trouble is lacking at the door because she wasn’t raised like me. I learned to study people because I grew up with a very intelligent mother who is very hard to lie to, while she grew up with a different kind of mother. She can be always suspecting because she grew up to always find errors, while I can be very supportive because I grew up to overlook errors and treat them later. People call me intelligent, but there are those who will call me dumb. SOmetimes I even think I am dumb, but if I am ever intelligent, it’s because I learned.

My sister and I, although born from the same parents, have discovered how differently life situations have shaped us. I think the only major trait I was born with is my introvertedness, but even as an introvert, I can speak up when duty requires, but the level to which I can speak up is also dependent on my level of experience. Experience changes us, It is capable of making us more or less of who we were truly born to be. A professional was never born a professional, but practice, execution and failures contributed to the success of that professional. I have come to learn that different people know me for different things, and everything I’m known for is as a result of their experience with me while the only major trait 80% would know me for is my introvertedness which is something I am born with.

Environment is a factor that nurtures or kills some traits in humans.

Yeah right

Is this not why they say that experience is the best teacher?

Our experiences over time accumulate to shape our behaviours.
