DON'T FORCE IT

There are certain things in life that shouldn't be forced. One of them is forcing companies to pay the interns they teach. I feel this should be based on merit and not enforced on any organization. A lot of organizations take in interns, train them, give them the necessary tools and opportunities to practice their course of study, without collecting a dime from them as a form of giving back to the community. It's funny how because there are companies who go further to provide stipends for interns so that they find learning comfortable, some people would think that it is completely how it should be but in the real sense, it isn't. I mean apart from the knowledge we get from school, is our school supposed to pay us for wanting to learn? Is the school supposed to care about how we come to school or pay our fees?. Except the school was built for the less privileged, it isn't supposed to give you more than what is meant, which is Knowledge.

This is how in the same way companies go further to teach us the real life example of what it means to do the job you aspire to do. If the company finds talent in you and decides to send you for more professional training, it is entirely up to them. If they must do that however, they will then need to consider your daily expenses and try to make sure you learn under the best conditions they can afford. At this point they are investing in you so you can one day repay them with your services. This is how it is supposed to be because at this point they ain't training you simply because you are an intern, they are training you because they need you to become a professional so you can help the company in the future. When companies like this view you as an investment, they pour resources into you to ensure your growth and commitment to them.

My company has a number of interns every year that they train as technicians. Those who do well become our technical trainees, and that is only when the company begins to pay them stipends. When I got to know my company pays as much as 2 million naira for a single trainee to attain one certification. Looking at the fact that these trainees need like 5 certifications to be called level 1 technicians. Now do you think that it is right for a company to just pay interns knowing how much they spend on trainees. We currently have more than 5 of them which means the company spends more than 10 million naira per certificate of which some of them end up leaving the company after everything the company did to get them those certifications. Life they say isn't fair at times, but no one should think they are entitled to anything because they feel it is the company's responsibility to them as interns.
