DEVELOP

One of the many ways a person can develop very fast is by how much they can dare to do. Confidence isn’t just measured by how much you know a thing, it can also be measured by how much you can get yourself out of trouble. I remember one of the many things that has helped me develop as a person and also in my career is daring to do things I could have never imagined. If there is one thing I have come to believe, it is that confident people are not those who are unafraid, they are those who, although afraid, do it anyway. And this is something that comes naturally to me. When I am asked if I can do something at work, I say yes as long as I am sure that at the end of the day the job will be done by me. This of course has almost landed me in trouble a good number of times, especially the times where I mess things up in the process, but then again it has helped me grow. When I used to say I learned the hard way, this is exactly what I meant.

I remember when I just started working with my company and my boss asked if I could develop the company’s website. I told him I could, but I also added that I had not done it professionally but it was something I could do. Truth be told, I had not even done it at all, but I knew if I tried I could. I took on courses, asked friends for advice and I did it eventually. But it did not come without it cost, I mean I had to stretch myself, day and night and even got into trouble at the end of the day after I purchased a hosting plan on discount and mistakenly changed the plan making the money I paid void and making me pay for the remainder with my own money for the next six months. But looking back now, it taught me how to get the best plans for my clients. Growth is painful, but to those who got guts to be ready to be shamed and take the pain, they will eventually reap the rewards.

I grew up hearing that the lion’s share belongs to those with a lion’s heart, and that is exactly how confidence works. This is the reason why it is necessary to spend our time in developing ourselves, it prepares us for the unexpected. So long you can stay calm, you can always think clearly and find solutions to the unexpected. I know a lot of people who freeze up when they are put on the spot, even if I do not have anything to say a second earlier, when I am put on the spot, I always know something will come out of me because at the very least I am not dumb. The fear of the unknown is what kills the most. But this does not mean I am void of fears, if you hear me speak, you will see I got a lot of them, but not when I am on the spot, I could be nervous, but when the time comes, I must deliver. It might not be 100%, in fact I know it does not even have to be 100% but just enough to get me through.
