CONTENT OR CONTEXT

I wrote about this some time ago in this community and I still believe strongly that our lives and social media are intertwined. If tomorrow my company for any reason sees me talking about how much harm the oil and gas industry is doing to the ecosystem they have every right to fire me because I can't be in a system that I'm earning from and speak badly against them. I mean it would be hypocritical to earn money from a job you hate, if you hate it so much, don't do it. It would also be hypocritical that I would say that since I have freedom of speech, I can say anything on social media and It should not be used to judge me in real life because it's all content. When I hear people say it's just content and it's not who I am, or they say I'm just following the trend I look at them with amazement and ask, who truly are you?

There is something I know for sure about man, you can't be the devil and an angel at the same time. You can only be one. This is why being an adult means that you are responsible for what you say, no matter where you say it. If I do a video advocating for a good ecosystem, it's okay, but if I do a video directly hitting on the oil and gas industry in the name of content that's trending, then I'm stupid because that's the industry that puts food on my table. This is why you can't be the devil on social media and claim to be an angel in person, if we are adults then we should be ready to face whatever comes out of our decisions. I strongly believe in taking responsibility for our actions, that is why I'm a strong believer of owning up to whatever you do whether on social media or anywhere else. I believe if you decide to be very active on social media, your company can also decide to protect their interest by watching everything you post.

Recently there was the story of a corps member who spoke up against the Nigerian government. A lot of people applauded her for her bravery, but I personally think that was a wrong move. Recently, the NYSC board decided to punish her by extending her service year and a lot of people were fuming against it, but I saw it coming and actually support it. It's not a matter of wrong or right, it's a matter of biting the hands feeding you or going against the people whose interest you vowed to protect. She clearly defaulted in that part which also shows that she didn't understand what she signed up for when choosing to serve the nation as a corps member. You can never find a soldier speaking bad of the country or the military in public, and that is because they understand it goes against everything they stand for. This doesn't mean they can't speak against it, but they must first leave before speaking.

My thoughts exactly. If you need to speak against an organization, you shouldn’t be working in that organization.
