BAD CLIMATE, NATURAL DISASTER

A few years back Nigeria suffered a devastating Natural disaster after Cameron opened their dam. It was so bad that the flood claimed lots of lives and properties and for a country who hardly suffers from Natural disasters, this was a really big hit because we never prepared for it. Although there are few places that are very prone to flood, such places usually make transportation routes in case of a flood occurring, but even they were not prepared for what happened to the Nation. There were only very few states that did not suffer from the flood and even in those states there were places the flood still reached. The flood lasted for over a month. States Like Bayelsa, Lokoja, Rivers (To mention but a few) Suffered the devastating effect of the flood.

To date We still suffer the devastating effect of the flood. The last time I was travelling home, I saw a huge chunk of the road between Rivers state and Bayelsa state was so bad that you could see how much the water ate into it and destroyed a huge chunk of it. It wasn’t a pleasing experience at all. I don’t want to even go to the part where the government neglected fixing most of these roads or left some unfinished, making travelling difficult. For example the road I just talked about is unfinished to date. Travelling that road with an open window will definitely cause harm to the people inside the vehicles. Or is it the countless number of accidents that have occured because of the heavy dust particles that erupt for every car passing that road.

When it comes to Natural Disasters, their effects can be very devastating because it feels like nature herself is fighting against you and you are helpless to fight back. If there is one thing I’m grateful for, it is the fact that we don’t often suffer from Natural disasters although Climate change is something that happens all the time. Things like earthquakes and Tsunamis do not affect us in this part of the world. With the careless lifestyle of both the government and the citizens in maintaining the environment, we are blessed not to be suffering from back to back disasters. Climate change however is something we all experience, last year was so hot during the summer or what we call dry season, the previous year was abnormal with us not fully experiencing some seasons or experiencing them in times we never expected.

For example, the harmattan season three years ago was very short, it started late december and ended the same month then came back again late february running through march and finally ended in April. It’s quite clear that the climate is changing and it’s affecting the weather conditions. During the flood era, it was disheartening to see water entering people’s houses and sea creatures finding their way to people's homes all because of climate change accompanied by poor management of resources. One third of the drinages were blocked so when the flood came, the drinages could not help to direct the flow of water. That was the one time I saw the adverse effects of Climate change.

The government has not been really helping and it's just so obvious that we need to take better care of our environment, to do the little we can collectively so as to to prevent future suffering/reoccurrences.

Thanks for sharing.
