A VALUABLE GIFT

A lot of times we often forget the things we have in a bid to get the things we want and too many times even me has fallen short of this. It is easy to forget how valuable your hands, legs, eyes and ears are. It is very easy to forget that you are not living in a warzone and are far away from one and thus do not know what it means to live in fear of a war attack. It's often easy to forget that I live in South South Nigeria where I can easily go to church without fear of coming back. These are blessings that we often take for granted and only those in dare need of them truly understand how important it is to have them. For example I had to stay without a phone for about a month because I was robbed and those days every single day felt like hell which made me realise how blessed I was for having a phone.

If I ever have to recount my blessings in a very uncomfortable situation, I am very sure with something like a gun pointed to my head the very first thing I would be grateful for will be life. I have to be grateful for it because at that moment every time looks precious and with whatever time I have left, I will want to be grateful for the gift of life and the fact that I got to live, make mistakes and make corrections. I remember two days ago I was leaving the office when suddenly I witnessed an assercination. It wasn't a hit and run, the assassins blocked their target's drive way in a very busy road, came down and started shooting in the air to make everyone know that something was about to happen. They took the driver out of the car to a safe distance, brought out the target and told him to say his last prayers. While he was still pleading he was shot 5 times just to make sure he wasn't coming back.

If someone had told me this perhaps I would say the story was a bit fabricated, but I witnessed it all from a safe distance. I heard the words as though the assassins wanted everyone to know what they were doing. I heard the plea for life, I saw the gun shots and I saw them take off. I saw the lifeless body of their target in the pool of his blood. A very young guy who did not look to be older than 35 had his life stolen away and there was nothing he could do or give to have even a minute extra. This made me think about my suicide attempt last year and how I survived, plus it has shown me that nothing is truly worth a person's life and we will be very foolish to take our lives because we feel it should end. Life is precious, and I am grateful for mine.

We really tend to not value what we have until they are no more, everything we have is a blessing and we ought to be grateful for them.

I've heard a lot of experiences in life that have come to the realization that we should always be grateful for everything.
