No matter how some people like to argue things, details matter. If the details are not important, there will be no need for facts. This is the order of the world and only those who try to escape accountability will argue it. You can not simply tell a student they have failed or pass without giving proof of how they failed or pass. There will always be a need to know a lot of things like the score they had in each subject that resulted in the failure, or the schools pass mark while comparing it to their total score. These things are important not just for transparency, but also for the student to know their strengths and weaknesses. For example, during the week, I wrote about how bad I was with business studies and how that no matter how hard I tried, my sheets were never balanced. After every classwork, tests, and assignments, I could see every error I made especially after comparing it to my classmates I knew I was not doing well.

This level of transparency helped me know my strengths and weaknesses, so when it was time for me to choose my preferred subjects in secondary school, I knew I was not good at business studies and for that reason alone I did not choose the social sciences, I knew that even though I liked listening to stories, I needed to work on my english I decided to leave literature for the Arts students which put me in the sciences. This did not mean I was 100% with science subjects, in fact I had to write WAEC exams twice because of physics. When it came to physics, I was more of a C student, and when I finally passed that subject in external exams, I came out with a C. Funny how I ended up in engineering at the end of the day, but that is a matter for another day.

I believe in a thorough grading system, not one that shows just passes or failures, but one that explains the how. I believe every student should learn to be accountable, and not shy away from their results. I believe that if people can take accountability for their performances, both teachers and students will sit up and know what they need to do to pass. If a student has an issue with a particular subject, the teacher can then try to help them understand that subject (if it is a diligent teacher though) . Students will not grow if they are not accountable and can not understand where they failed. Sometimes the way to succeed is to own our failures. For parents who like to be involved in their children's academics, a thorough grading system will really help them understand whether the child’s performance is good or not and why they are performing the way they do. A good parent will know how to help their child from here and will be able to understand their child’s academic struggle.
