Running with Technology: Are We Leaving Our Families Behind?

Dear Hive Friend and Hive Learner Members,

Just yesterday, we were talking casually during our tea break at the office. The conversation turned toward the categorization of generations. This made me curious, and I checked the parameters used for categorization and came to know that they depend on the birth year. I knew that I am from Gen Y and also know now why I am Gen Y. Another term used for Gen Y is Millennials, and our kids are Gen Alpha. We are the generation which has experienced both worlds—without technology and with booming technology. Millennials are more inclined toward the digital world in my opinion. So, if we have to compare the era we are living in with the past or future, what will be your conclusion on the same? I have mixed opinions, actually. We have tasted technology, so living without it is one of the hardest parts for us; for example, just imagine a situation where you forget your mobile phone at home in the morning and get it back at night. The older generation cannot imagine the difficulty someone can have without a mobile in today's era. It's not just a mode of communication; it's more than that. It's a wallet for most of us, a reminder for many of us, a library, and a mode of entertainment for many of us; you can add many more to the list.

No doubt technology has made our lives easy; you can easily access many things which were not available in the past before the introduction of the internet. You do not want to cook something and are also not in the mood to go out? Just order from an app sitting on your couch or bed, and within minutes, the food will be at your doorstep. Is it the birthday of your friend and you forgot? The reminder on your mobile did not forget, so don't worry about it. Are you feeling bored? Just turn on the TV or unlock the screen of your phone; not hundreds, but thousands of options are available to watch. You want to meet your old friends living a long distance from your location? Air travel has made it short-distance. You just look around you; in every aspect of life, you will feel that we are dependent on technology, and really, it makes our lives easy and saves our time. But is that the reality?
Technology was developed to make us comfortable and save time. Technology has no doubt done that job successfully, but on the other side, it also brings some challenges. For example, agricultural machinery was built to save effort and time; technology was able to bring both, but did the farmers really get free time? Greed overcame comfort; growing one crop a year was changed to two or even three crops a year from the same land. Another example is air travel, and this is my personal experience also. No doubt air travel makes long-distance travel possible in a short time, but at what cost? Our bosses want us to start early and come back the same day so that we can join the office the next day. Imagine a scenario where you have to attend a meeting at 10 AM; you have to reach the destination airport before 8 AM (in this case, you have to go directly to the meeting location). To reach the destination airport by 8 AM means you must book a flight that departs from the origin by 6 or 6:30 AM. In such a case, you have to reach the airport two hours before, and you must add the road travel time required also. In a nutshell, you have to get up too early and also come back late; in this way, your whole routine the day before the travel and after the travel gets affected.

I am not saying the old era was better; they had their own challenges in life, and also, we do not have any experience with that. In today's era, we are running along with technology, and in this way, we are getting away from our family, relationships, personal life, and many more. The only big advantage of the past was that people, as well as families, were united, and they used to spend time together.

Many of those from the gen Y generation are finding difficult to fit in, moving from little or no technology to a lot of technology is a challenge for many.
