Mobility is a special ability which can not be taken for granted. We move to feed, to work and earn, to learn, to socialise, to meet friends and family.
And one of the most common means of mobility is a car.
We are always on the move, even the introverts among us and those who do remote jobs. We are all moving at one point or the other and from one point to the other.
Which is why cost of transportation affects the prices of all goods and services.
Having a car is a necessity for a family. It may not always be cost effective but it would come in handy from time to time during family functions, emergencies and when there is need to carry goods.
Agreed, the cost of maintenance is usually on the high side but it is always possible to own a car that one can maintain with ease and not buying one which the maintenance would render the owner bankrupt.
I don't believe making one car per family a rule is a good development. It puts limitations on families and overdependence on one car which can fail at anytime and you won't have a backup.
The only way I would consider this rule is if every family is entitled to a car. I say this because I know that in some neighborhoods, many people depend on the car of one family and as such one car could be serving 15 or more families.
Hence, if a law is made that it's one car per family and yet some families don't have cars, that means that such neighbourhoods will suffer at anytime the car being depended upon disappoints, which is a given bearing in mind how unavoidable car trouble is.
Just a few days ago, when my family wanted to leave the village and come back to the town after the Christmas celebrations, my mum's car refused to start. It was only after we used the battery in my dad's car to jumpstart it before it picked up.
Imagine if a second car was not there. The closest relative whom we would have called to help was my dad's brother who already travelled back to town that morning with his family. The next car in the family compound would take me 5 minutes and you know how heavy a car battery is.
What if he is not around too? Or if he refuses to lend his battery.
It would be better if a family considered their finance and earnings and decided to not get a second car than for government to make it a law.
On the issue of carbon emissions, it would be nice if government found a way to make electric cars more budget friendly and accessible. That way, we use environmental friendly cars without placing limitations on families.
Not to talk of the fact that some families are larger than the others.
My mum's family initially comprised about 9 children. Which car would they have all fit into if such a rule was in place then, not to talk of accommodating the parents too.
Such a rule would only make life hard for families and we already have it hard enough. I am certain that there are other ways government can reduce carbon emissions like also providing enough light so as to reduce the use of generators which are also huge contributors to the carbon emissions we complain about.

One car per family isn't enough. If a father has his and the mother has hers, it would be of great help to the family. There would be fewer expenses for transportation, and if Incase something happens to the other car, the other would be of help too. Thank you for sharing.
Yes, exactly. Thank you so much
