The Right That Ends Where My Chest Begins

About three or four years ago, where I stayed as a student, there was this meningitis scare. No one really talked about it properly. I only got to hear it just the same way others did, through one of my neighbors that was talking about it to someone else on her phone one evening. The following day, the voice went higher because most people started to ask one another who had been vaccinated and who was yet to be.

At that moment, most people didn't react because one or two personal decisions had a public face, and people who came across each other were just looking at each other's faces, including myself.

I have decided to take a deeper look into this question, and I must be honest, it is not as simple as I think due to what I have seen, read, and watched. I have seen some people who will never take vaccines, and this is not because they are lazy but because they are afraid. I have a friend like that who's always afraid of going to the hospital just because of how they handled one of her family members carelessly in the past. She has that fear in her.

And some have been influenced by their religious fathers, people they trust, even though the community that they grew up in believes that some certain things, like vaccines, can be very spiritual and harmful to them. Well, in the real scene, I am not mocking those fears. Some of them do not have the proper knowledge and understanding, so they will never agree.

But here is my take on this. I want to say that a belief is a private thing until it stops being private. So at any moment when an individual has refused to be vaccinated. His body naturally becomes a free road that any disease can just ride on without potholes, because that body will be too weak to fight it, and the decision isn't that person's alone, because it never was.

A lot of people just act as if their choices happen in sealed containers, meanwhile they carry their bodies through the same road, market, church, and buses just like everyone else. They never have any barrier between their immunity.

Well, I will say that people should not be forced against their wishes because it's honestly a dangerous line to cross. In the past, I read how a government forced its way to get some certain people vaccinated, which was against their wish, and it left lasting damage to that community that was already vulnerable. I want to believe that everyone's history is important to them and it should never be overlooked. Because when it comes to allowing consequence-free freedom, forcing everyone, and allowing total freedom, there's a wide space. And I believe that space in-between is where these true societies are mandated to do the difficult work of building honesty and trust. I always believe that my body doesn't exist in isolation, even though I have freedom over my body.
