Learning to Trust What I Cannot See

(edited)

I never thought we could have some standard insurance here until I saw this prompt, and I went to Google to search for insurance in my country, and lo and behold, I saw different insurance ranging from house insurance to life insurance to even mobile insurance. And that made me remember just two weeks ago when I was on a call with my sister. As we were talking, she told me that she just got a new car because the car she was using before, one of the trees in her compound fell on it, and the insurance company told her that they can only compensate her but will not be responsible for the full repair.

Well, in my mind, I was like, over here, if I start putting money into any insurance, it's just like subscribing to Netflix on my phone knowing full well that I will not watch it, and to be sincere, I have no insurance, and I am also sure that the majority of the people here are on the same table with me. Or does anyone reading this have one? Though it might be good in some areas, it just felt like putting money into something I will never use, and to be honest, I hardly hear people even talk about insurance because most of us prefer to use our money for another thing that will benefit us.

Though I have never imagined myself or pray to be in any emergency issues, even medical emergency but I remember when I was serving I have this friend of mine who was working in an hospital and every month, they usually remove hazard insurance money from her salary, though it was that much, then towards the end of our service, she was telling me that she does not even know the usefulness of the hazard money they have been removing from her salary and that they better refund her because she calculated it and it was something. Jokingly, I told her that one is gone. Exactly how my friend felt is how the majority of us usually feel too because at the end of the day, we will discover that the insurance might not even be needed.

I am not saying having insurance is bad, but over here, do most of us really need it? At the moment, I do not have any insurance, mainly because of the type of stories surrounding it, or I am not interested because I do not see any need for it. But I know that some people do it as a way of saving ahead in case they fall into any problems in the future.

Though I have learned to always get prepared for the best while expecting the worst, this is one of the reasons why I am building my savings first, taking care of myself, and maybe one day, I might consider doing insurance even though this life is uncertain because who knows if I might need it?
But is having insurance really needed in a country like ours?

Thank you for reading.

⚠️⚠️⚠️ ALERT ⚠️⚠️⚠️

HIVE coin is currently at a critically low liquidity. It is strongly suggested to withdraw your funds while you still can.

Having insurance isn’t a bad idea, but as you mentioned, it’s not suitable for everyone. People who don’t have significant assets to protect may not see the need for it. Most times, it’s those with substantial wealth who opt for insurance, since they want a safety net to rely on in case of major losses.
Personally, I would also prefer building up my own emergency savings rather than depending on an insurance company.

Yes, I know there are insurance. But what is the essence of doing what I might end up not needing?

I like how you threw the question at the end of your post. lol
Do we need insurance in Nigeria? Yes, I would say but that’s for those who are already at the top. They don’t mind getting insured as long as they have the money to cover up for that. But yes, it’s always an advantage for them. But seriously, getting insured on something we might never use? That’s something.

Yes, some of them might do, but I'm sure it's not on life insurance or health insurance because most of them travel out to do those things. And as for car or other insurance, they rather buy another car than to get it repaired when damaged. So, I don't really think it's working here because majority of people are looking for daily bread, is it someone like that that will be putting money somewhere....

Also made that relation between insurance and streaming hehe. Something instead of having something you don't use actively it's better to save the money.

That was the best example I came up with while writing which is totally relatable.
