Choosing a Hero for My Rescue

Like one of my favorite activists, Aisha Yesufu usually say "Today's victims were yesterday's survivors, and tomorrow's victims will be today's survivors. The question I always ask is, Who is next?" And that is the real question right there: who?

We hardly ever think about what being in danger really means until it is our ass next on the line. That random thought of friends and families going to the radio station or police station, posting our pictures, or announcing that we have been missing on the TV news, that thought of being kidnapped only sounds like an imaginable nightmare that happens only in the movies we watch. Then suddenly, going through this post in the corner of your room or anywhere you are, just think that you are going on a highway and something happened where you are trapped in darkness. Who will come to my rescue? That is the question that might hit the mind of some of us right away. Not talking about reality because real life has its own limits, but from the gallery of all the fictional characters who are known to be courageous, who has the wisdom, tactics, and even the ability to cause chaos.

Yes, we might know a lot of functional characters, but in this case, the one we are choosing to rescue us in that type of dark moment isn't about play but the one who showcases how hopeful we are and our inner value. While a lot of people might not think twice before choosing Superman because he is strong, some might go for Spiderman because he can fly, and some might even pick Sherlock Holmes due to his clever mind. But in my case, I will go for someone who is loyal, has empathy, and is determined and not only powerful. In fact, my choice reflects my cultural background because I value a superhero who inspires hope and intelligence.

So, in this case where I am in a dark, imaginative room where I am kidnapped and I need someone who will come and rescue me, I am going to call on Batman. This is not because he is my favourite superhero from all these Marvel series, the strongest amongst them all, but because he has this persistent and determined spirit in him that most do not have. Until justice is properly served, he will keep on trying to get justice. He has got this unshakable spirit in him as his mind is also a weapon. Comparing him to all the other superheroes that I have read about or seen in all these Marvel series, his loyalty is unmatched; he will not just come to my rescue, but he will make sure that those who are responsible are brought to justice and held accountable for their actions. This kind of persistence from him usually brings me this comfort when I see him in movies.

And there is something sobering about this prompt, which is, at some point in our lives, we all need rescue, whether it is from financial struggle, heartbreak, loneliness, struggles, or even to be set free from the thoughts we are having. But in reality, we cannot see any of these superheroes that are going to come to our rescue. But when we have those imaginative thoughts of who we want to come for our rescue, it reveals all the qualities we love about them, traits like wisdom, persistence, loyalty, strength or kindness.

And as for me like I earlier said, I will have to pick Batman because it reflect my deepest need, maybe part of who I am and my value. So, if you are to pick a superhero to come for your rescue, who would it be?
