The healthcare system of my country is sadly nothing to write home about, not that we don't have qualified and capable hands it's just that our government is not prioritizing our health system the way it should.
Health workers I believe should be one of the top prospect in the country as they sacrifice so much to maintain the health of the citizens, they sacrifice their time, sleep and so much more, yet these heroes still have to stay months without getting paid, and for this reason we see most of our intelligent doctors migrate to a more developed country to offer their service at where they feel more appreciated and also afford a better life for themselves and families.
You wouldn't blame them, because after going through several years of study and hoping to offer their best to their country, the lack of basic health facilities is another cumbersome problem. I remember once when my daughter got admitted into one of the general hospitals in my state, how hectic it was to see a long queue of patients with a few numbers of doctors to attend to them, and the few that worked often got too tired and irritable due to much workload.
And even the few patients that got admitted, might end up having to share bed space or have none at all, I also had to go outside the hospital every day to get a certain medication that was prescribed for her, because it wasn't available in the pharmacy attached to the hospital, now imagine if it was an emergency. Sadly, most people have lost their lives for this very reason.
It was even more shocking to hear about doctors operating on patients using torch lights due to a power outage, It is indeed very bad as this is unprofessional and life-threatening.
Doctors sometimes have no choice but to go on strike so their demands can be heard and met by the government. It isn't a good option because of the dire consequences of having their patients suffer, some even dying, not because they ought to but because of the lack of care in the absence of the doctor.
I unfortunately lost a cousin sister due to this very reason, she suffered kidney failure and needed close attention from the doctor but at the apex of the treatment, the doctors all went on strike, without further care, she lost hope and gave up.
I don't believe it is the happiness of any doctor to leave his or her patient, but they have families they need to take care of as well, and shouldn't be pushed by the government to go on strike before their demands are met.
The healthcare system in my country requires a thorough change. The government needs to prioritize healthcare, investing in infrastructure, equipment, and health personnel. Health workers should be valued and compensated fairly for their services. This includes timely payment of salaries, better working conditions, and opportunities for professional growth. Also, the government should establish open channels of communication with healthcare professionals to address their concerns and implement their suggestions. This would help prevent strikes and bring a positive drastic change to our health system.
