If you think education is expensive, try ignorance.
I'm sure we've all come across this quote more than we can count. Being educated or literate, sure equips us with more knowledge and information to make informed decisions about our lives, health, relationships with people, etc, but there is a thin line between being informed and being a better person ethically. I believe this stems from individuality, irrespective of their qualification, sure, most illiterates are often stigmatized as being the common criminals due to their lack of skill or certification, yet, it goes both ways, as some aren't educated but have high self esteem and integrity, and don't go about being a nuisance to their society, rather they contribute with their lay man understanding and never fail to ask questions when things becomes too complicated for them to understand.
In the same vein, there are educated criminals as well, who use their awareness to scam and take advantage of people. Haven't you heard cases of bankers becoming informants to robbers and giving them the strategy and layout of the bank they work in to these criminals? There are also those that, no matter the level of education they've attained, still lack the right attitude to blend and make a positive impact on their society.
These days, every child now has the opportunity to become educated irrespective of the social class of their parent, as there are affordable and even free schools for every child. It's uncommon to find a parent who would restrict their child from attaining knowledge, why? because everyone is now enlightened about he benefits of being informed and fit into the society, irrespective of what you end up doing at the end of the day, whether a white collar or skilled job, being educated sets you apart.
In the aspect of parenting, I believe a parent being literate would be of more advantage to a child, because they are able to easily blend in their child's life in all aspect, especially education-wise, they can easily communicate effectively with their children's teachers and understand the aspect of their child's education they need to work on, reading to them, help them with their homework, and engage them in meaningful conversations. This, in turn, can lead to stronger, more positive relationships between parents and children.
But some illiterate parents might not be inclined to do all of that. I recently helped a teenage daughter of my neighbour solve her further maths assignment, even though her mother loves and know the value of education, the best she could do was provide because she didn't have the opportunity of going to school to gain all of that knowledge needed to help her daughter. After assisting the her at home, it made her have a clearer understanding of the topic because I explained to her using another approach I learnt in school during my time, which was different from how her maths teacher had taught her. So you see, we can't ignore the place of literacy as a parent; it adds more benefits.
Being literate is good, but in the aspect that literacy does not make one inclined to hurt a fellow human or make mistakes that hurt everyone around you is not valid, because this is a matter of choice, You might be literate enough to know the right thing to do, but greed and other bad character imbedded in such person can still make them hurt a fellow human, this is a matter of choice and not literacy dependent, in the like manner, Ignorance does'nt stop one from knowing the right thing to do.

When good character is out of a person's life whether he or she is educated, it becomes a.mess and it stinks.
Home training and self-discipline helps an individual become a better version of themselves.
