my most memorable new year: Getting rid of stairs

Everything that happens on new year's day tends to leave a mark on our memories because it is the first day of the year. I have made lots of beautiful memories on new year's day. Memories as far back as my childhood remembrance would allow me. But the most memorable of this memory was when my parents moved us to our own house.

Source

In 2012, we lived in a rented apartment. The house was a three-storey building and our apartment was on the second floor. The house was beautiful inside and outside, we truly love the place but the problem with the house was that as beautiful as it was, there was no water. Water was not running in any of the taps in the apartments as big as it was. The only way we could get water was to take the water through the stairs. This was difficult because we had to carry water and at the same time climb lots of stairs. I can't remember the exact number of stairs but it was a lot. To lighten our mood, my sister and I would count the number of stairs and compete with each other when fetching water, very funnyπŸ˜„.

In 2014, the landlord sent a message through the caretaker to every tenant that anyone who refuses to pay water charges should pack out of his house. You should have seen the way all the tenants were shouting at the caretaker in angry voices, nobody was paying for water not provided. When he realise that the voices were getting louder, he ran to save himselfπŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚. I can't blame him, one of our neighbours has four hefty sons, they were so huge, you would think twice before approaching them.

My parents decided that instead of paying charges for water they are not using, they might as well complete our house. Lucky for us, the house had built the house halfway. Some money was borrowed from my mom's cooperative society and together with my parents savings the house was completed in December. Our rent expired in October 2014, but we didn't leave because there was a law that states that tenants can stay up to three months in a house for free if the landlord issues them an eviction letter to give them time to get another place.

January 1st 2015, we moved to our house. My siblings and I were extremely happy πŸ’ƒπŸ’ƒ, no more carrying water through hundreds of stairs (am sure the stairs were not up too hundred but still carrying water and climbing those stairs was not easy).

After we moved out, some of our old neighbours came and told us how they went to beg the landlord and eventually he agreed to allow them to continue living in the house. However, My parents had refused to beg because they felt cheated. I feel the same way, why should we pay for services we didn't use? Some landlords are terrible, they care only about their money and are not bothered about the lives of their tenants.

This day is the most memorable new year day in my life because I finally got rid of the stairs 😁😁

Wow I feel your pains friend, I've also experience the water fetching stuff, although we aren't living at the stairs but it's so stressful.

Thanks God your parents didn't beg that wicked landlord if not they might not finish your own building as at that time. There is nothing as beautiful like been in ones owned apartment, it gives rest of mind alot, thanks for sharing this

Am happy they didn't beg him also, nothing as peaceful as living in your own home.

It's always very stressful carrying water through those stairs.... I could remember when our house had no water also and my own case was worse because am always the guy that carry the water since my dad don't want the ladies carrying it...
That was a perfect gift for a new year celebration πŸ˜ƒ

I love your dad, he taught you how to respect ladies, how I wish it was only my brother that was doing the fetching then 😁😁.

There's nothing like owning ones house, I'd have asked if this house was situated in Lagos, seeing that you live and work in Lagos.

The experience of living in houses without the required amenities was appalling and fraustrating, congratulations to your parents, Indeed if was memorable

Nothing like staying in your own house, you have peace of mind. No, the house is in Ilorin. My parents are staying in Ilorin, work brought me to Lagos.

Thank you for your comment.

Awwe! So touching, I celebrate your great parents, that was a wise decision. My Dad often says a family house is more than a home, it's a family altar marked by bloodline. Sure has to be the most memorable year indeed. Happy New Year by the way, cheers to more memorable pleasant eventsπŸ₯‚

Your dad couldn't be more right. It definitely was the most memorable year in our lives, am grateful to the landlord, his actions forced my parents to make that decision.

Happy new year, thanks for your lovely comment and for stopping by

@geelocks,

Oh my goodness... Everything about your post, made me cringe. I have lived in similar situations, and having Multiple Sclerosis... many of these things are close to home. From your post:

I am reminded of stories from my grandparents. Walking miles from a "community well" to bring water back. I think we sometimes get accustomed to things. If we had been through the rough times... like you have obviously experienced. We might appreciate things more... yes?

Thank you for sharing this with us... hope you are having a great New Year!

I heard the same stories too. I can't imagine how they did it, I didn't walk that far but I knew how stressful it was.

We might appreciate things more... yes?

Yes, I certainly appreciate us moving into the new house and not passing through the stress again.

My year has been going well so far. Happy new year and thank you so much for your support and for your lovely comment @wesphilbin

Living in a house of your own comes with a peace of mind words cannot express. Thank God for your family's Achievements.

0E-8 BEE

It most certainly does, the fact that you are not paying house rent gives you peace.

Thanks for stopping by

What a relief from the struggles of passing through stairs to get water to the house.
Also, the feeling of living in one's house is immeasurable

0E-8 BEE

This is something, landlords can be so annnoying..

0E-8 BEE

Many landlords do not have the fear of God, how can you tell people to pay for what they are not using?

Climbing stairs with water on your head can be very stressful, I am glad your family moved to your space and life became more pleasant for you all.

Awwwwwn πŸ₯°
Such a lovely parents you got. So thoughtful of them to complete the house even by borrowing
Leaving in ur house is a prayer answered..no more carrying water in the stairs 🀣🀣☺️

wow what a pitiful situation, but it is the harsh truth, how we human beings take advantage and abuse each other. Fortunately your father was already building his own house and they were just passing through that apartment. Those who had no other choice had to continue to endure the situation. Fortunately they were allowed to continue living there without paying for water service they did not enjoy. They should have been given a discount on their rent for not having the vital liquid available.

But well, that's how we human beings are, sometimes we act like amimals against our own kind. That's why I understand that January 1st is an excellent day for you and the family ❀️🌷😘.
