3 Food Combos I Made That Turned Out Pure Chef's Kiss #creative-sunday

Hey everyone, it is Sunday and I am back with a relaxing Sunday post. Every dish has its own story or a special twist behind it, and today I am sharing three of my absolute favorite home kitchen creations.

The Structural Bread Burger

image.jpeg

First off, let us start with something basic yet revolutionary. My dad rarely cooks, but whenever he steps into the kitchen, he cooks exceptionally well. On that particular day, he prepared delicious pan-seared beef. Unfortunately, I already had something else planned for dinner that night, but looking at his mouth-watering beef had me craving it insanely. It was practically taunting me while I tried to finish my regular meal!

Most of you from Pakistan know that the Butt family line [a famous Pakistani ethnic clan legendary for their immense love of rich food] is known for eating passionately. As a Butt myself, my stomach was full that day, but my eyes were still starving! I kept plotting how I could fit that tantalizing beef into my belly anyway.

I am a massive fan of Zinger burgers [crispy fried chicken burgers], and burgers are always easy for me to devour. So, I ran down to the local shop and bought a couple of light, standard burger buns. My food greed was through the roof at this point. My stomach was saying no, but my heart looked at that beef and said yes! I sliced open the buns on both the top and bottom sides and stuffed an outrageous mountain of beef filling inside.

Here came the structural crisis: I realized that if I tried to stack and eat the burger like that, all that rich meat filling would spill out with every single bite. To fix this, I grabbed a slice of plain white bread and slid it right into the center as a middle support layer!

Plain Rice Turned Street-Food Chaat

Moving on to the second dish. Everyone looks at this photo and asks, "Qasim, what on earth is this? Is it Biryani [a famous layered spiced rice dish]? What kind of Biryani looks like that?" But the funniest part is that it is not Biryani at all!

One day I came home completely exhausted and asked my mother if she could cook something quick. My mother is quite elderly, around 65+, so she told me she was feeling exhausted herself. I asked her, "Can you just put some plain white rice on the stove to boil?" She replied, "Yes, I can certainly do that much." She assumed I was going to eat the boiled rice with milk and sugar like sweet rice, but I already had a wild masterplan brewing in my head.

I ran over to the local corner store owned by my long-time friend Bilal and asked him to give me some crunchy toppings to throw over rice. He looked at me confused and asked, "What kind of toppings?" I told him, "Just give me some Namakpare [crunchy salted fried dough chips], Samosas [crispy deep-fried savory pastry pockets], Pakoras [spiced crispy fritters], and that special spiced chickpea curry sauce you serve!"

The raw ingredients looked something like this. I actually recreated the whole spread just for this blog post because back on that original night, I was so hungry I completely forgot to take a pre-assembly photo!

Desi Smokey Alfredo Wheat Pasta (Daal Roti Fusion)

Now let us talk about today's absolute showstopper: my special "Desi Smokey Alfredo Wheat Pasta Loaded with Rich Fiber" or, as I like to call it, the poor man's Daal Roti turned into the rich man's Alfredo Pasta!

The story behind this one is super entertaining. I was having intense cravings for Italian pasta, but gourmet pasta in restaurants around here is ridiculously expensive, and half the time the taste does not even justify the high price tag. So there I was, dreaming of creamy Alfredo pasta, while at home we had traditional Daal Roti [lentil curry served with flatbread]. Specifically, I eat Chapati [thin, unleavened whole-wheat flatbread], which we buy fresh from the bakery every evening. For anyone who does not know what a Chapati looks like, let me show you.

Since I am an experimental fusion chef at heart, there was no way I was going to eat plain old Daal Roti the boring way. I folded up the Chapati and grabbed kitchen scissors to start slicing.

Just like this! By folding it first, the cuts came out neatly uniform, and in just a few quick slices, I created long, beautiful ribbons of whole-wheat fettuccine pasta. Once the pasta strips were ready, it was time for the Daal [creamy yellow mung bean curry]. I poured it generously over the wheat pasta ribbons, but here is a close-up shot of the Daal itself so you can appreciate the rich texture.

And just like that, my healthy pasta craving was completely satisfied! I got all the comfort of a gourmet pasta meal on a budget, and I ate every single bite with dramatic style like I was starring in a high-end commercial. To all my fellow Desis [South Asians], you definitely need to try this clever hack at home! Just one crucial piece of advice: add a reasonable amount of Daal and mix it very gently. You do not want a full-blown lentil flood that turns your delicate wheat pasta ribbons into a mushy porridge mix!
