Looking back at my life some years ago, when I was in the hospital in the whole of one month, sincerely my body was weak, I couldn’t walk because of the pains from the injury but it was as if my mind was even weaker, my mental health was at stake, at a point I even fell into depression, I was always crying and thinking, both my mind and physical body was not having it at all. Because my mind was settled, I couldn’t even eat and I couldn’t think straight, my mum would cry when she saw me crying, because she knew that I was loosing it both mentally, emotionally and physically.

However there are ways in which one can strike a balance between our mental and physical health;

• The first step is understanding that both your mental health and physical health is interconnected, with one the other cannot function, when a person thinks too much it can cause high blood pressure and this can lead to a person having cardiac arrest and the person would definitely end up in the hospital, when you understand this it becomes easier to nourish both aspect of live.

• create a routine that serves both and also a routine that works for you, a routine that includes physical activities, mental breaks, good sleep and having nutrious meals can help improve our health over time, speaking of exercises for me back, I remember two people assisting me whenever I wanted to take a stroll and trust me the pains was hell but over time when I got home I could stroll a bit around the compound without the help of anyone.

• practicing mental hygiene is also a very nice, this worked for me personally, I started writing on here and it helped me remove my mind from a lot of things, I also picked up a skill and took classes for it, mind you I wasn’t even completely healed when I picked up this skill but I enjoyed every bit of it even though somedays I didn’t even have the energy or when the pains came I still focused on my skill.

I also seeked therapy when needed on the days that I was feeling down by this I talked to genuine friends and family members.

• setting of boundaries and managing stress is very essential, chronic stress is a major disruptor of mental clarity and physical health, its very important to set boundaries in relationships, at work. It is okay to say no, to rest and to unwind. Stress management techniques like deep breathing, yoga, meditation and muscles relaxation can make a big difference.
