Should Saving Lives Depend On Money?

Hello Community,

This one thing that has always been hard for me to fully understand is how somebody can be lying in pain, needing urgent treatment or surgery, and the first thing they hear is, “Deposit first.”

Like, I understand hospitals need money to run, Equipment is expensive, medicines are expensive, doctors and nurses deserve to be paid too, I am not ignoring that part at all, but sometimes it honestly feels wrong when human life starts looking like something that only people with money deserve to save.

Especially in a country like Nigeria where many people are already struggling financially, You will hear stories of people rushing someone to the hospital after an accident, and instead of immediate treatment, there is delay because of payment issues. In some cases, before money even arrives, the person is gone.

That kind of thing is painful to even think about.

Now, I know doctors took an oath to preserve lives, and I genuinely believe most doctors actually want to help people, i don’t think many of them wake up and enjoy turning patients away, but the sad reality is that healthcare today has become heavily tied to business and money.

That is the real problem, Because even hospitals themselves have costs, salaries to pay, machines to maintain, electricity, drugs, everything, so in their own eyes, if they keep treating everybody for free, the hospital may eventually collapse too.

But honestly, there has to be a better balance somewhere , because life should not become something that depends completely on who can pay immediately.

I think one of the biggest issues is that our healthcare system is not properly structured to support ordinary people,In many developed countries, there are emergency systems, insurance systems, or government support that can at least help people get urgent care before payment becomes the focus.

But here, many people don’t even have proper health insurance. One surgery alone can wipe out someone’s entire savings, and the painful part is that illness doesn’t wait for financial stability.

Somebody can be hardworking and still not have enough money for emergency surgery, that doesn’t mean their life matters less, Personally, I feel hospitals should at least stabilize emergency patients first before financial discussions start becoming the main issue, i am not saying everything should become free because realistically that is difficult, but emergency care should never feel completely locked behind money.

There should also be better government involvement honestly, because too much pressure is being placed on hospitals and individuals alone, If healthcare systems were stronger, maybe hospitals wouldn’t feel forced to make every decision based on immediate payment.

Another thing I think society itself can improve on is support systems, sometimes you see people online raising money urgently for surgeries, and strangers contribute within hours, that alone shows that people actually care, imagine if there were more organized community medical support systems, charities, or emergency funds that hospitals could rely on in situations like this.

Because the truth is, nobody plans to suddenly become critically ill, And honestly, I don’t think keeping people alive should feel like a luxury.

At the same time though, I also don’t think all the blame should be dumped on doctors alone, a lot of healthcare workers are already under pressure mentally and emotionally. Some are overworked, underpaid, and still trying their best inside a broken system.

So for me, the real issue is bigger than just individual doctors refusing treatment, it is the healthcare structure itself, a system where money decides how fast somebody gets help is already failing somewhere.

At the end of the day, I just believe human life should always come first,Yes, hospitals need money to function, but there should still be systems in place that allow people to receive urgent care without feeling like their bank account determines whether they live or die.

I agree here with you, they should try to put up something to help people that really need the treatment to save their life really
