Designer Babies Sounds Good , But Should We?

The idea of choosing what your baby looks like, how smart they will be and whether they will have health problems or not, sounds really good at first, but the problem is, things that sound too good to be true usually have something attached that we do not think about before we said yes.

Let's be honest , genetically modifying a baby while it is still a fetus means making decisions for them that they cannot make for themselves, the parents are deciding things like eye color, intelligence and physical traits like they are ordering something online , the baby has no say in it, the baby then comes into the world already shaped by someone preferences, not by nature or God just by what the parents wanted at the time.

I do not think this is okay, I know it sounds good to remove diseases or health conditions before the child is born, nobody wants their child to suffer, right? So when we start designing features and picking qualities like we are shopping, we are doing something else entirely, something that should make us uncomfortable.

Because where does it stop? If one family can afford to give their child the genes and another family cannot then we have created a new kind of inequality that goes deeper than money or class, It goes into the body itself, the children of wealthy parents will not just have better schools and better food, they will have been built better from the start, that is a very dangerous world to be walking into.

There is also this thing to be said about accepting life as it comes, Babies are not products, they are not things you design to meet a standard, every child that comes into the world with whatever they have, whatever they look like, whatever limitations they might have is a life that deserves to be received, When we start treating pregnancy like a process that you can edit and fine tune, then we start losing something about what it means to be human.

I believe babies are a blessing and blessings do not come with a customization form, God, nature however you choose to see it puts something into each child that is meant to be , Our job as parents is to receive the baby and raise them well not to make changes because we have a particular kind of picture in our head.

The precedent this sets for the future is what worries me the most, once a generation grows up knowing that babies can be designed the next generation will expect it, the one after that will demand it, before long a born child, one that came exactly as they were meant to might be the exception and not the rule.

That is not a future we should be building, some things should stay in Gods hands, Babies are a gift from God, We should not be trying to change them before they are even born, we should be accepting them for who they are and loving them no matter what, Genetically modifying babies is not the answer it is a way of playing God and that is not our place.
