So I think mental health days are a good idea, we already have sick leave for when we're physically ill, so I don't see why taking care of our mental health should be treated as something less important, the truth is, not every sickness is physical, sometimes you are not coughing.

You don't have malaria
You don't have a fever, Mentally you are exhausted, you are stressed,You're overwhelmed, You are emotionally drained and you just don't have the energy to function well.
I have realized that mental stress can affect someone as much as physical sickness, sometimes it is even worse because people can not see it, If someone comes to work with a broken leg everyone understands that they need time to recover.
If someone is mentally exhausted people expect them to just snap out of it and keep working like nothing is wrong, Life doesn't work that way. We're are human beings, There are days when everything just feels heavy. Work pressure, Family responsibilities. Financial worries, Personal struggles... Sometimes everything comes together at once.
On those days having one or two mental health care days to rest, reset and clear your head could make someone more productive when they return to work, so yes I think companies should consider it.
Now I understand why some employers might be against the idea, The biggest concern is obvious, People might abuse it, Lets be honest, if some people know they can simply say, "I'm taking a mental health care day " there is a chance they will use it as an excuse to stay home and relax even when nothing is actually wrong.
That is human nature, some people always look for loopholes.. I don't think the possibility of abuse means the idea itself is bad, People abuse sick leave, Some people fake illness just to avoid work, that doesn't mean we should cancel the sick leave altogether.
Instead I think there should be guidelines, For example companies could limit the number of mental health care days employees can take in a year, not too many, just enough for people who genuinely need them.
Managers should create an environment where employees can speak openly without feeling judged, sometimes people don't even need some days off, sometimes they just need a workload free for a day or two. Flexible working hours and someone willing to listen.
Mental health care day is not always about staying at home, sometimes it is about feeling supported, I also believe employees have a responsibility here, If you are given mental health care days don't misuse them, they are meant to help people recover not become holiday periods.
When people abuse policies it becomes harder for everyone else to benefit from them, at the end of the day I think healthier employees make better workers, someone who is mentally refreshed will probably do work than someone who is burned out but forced to keep showing up every day.
Companies often focus on productivity, they sometimes forget that productivity starts with people, take care of the people and the work will usually take care of itself, so yes I believe that mental health days can actually work. Not because people want days off but because mental health deserves the same level of attention as physical health.
Long as there are clear rules, honesty from employees and understanding from employers I think it is something that could benefit everyone in the long run.
