Trust Is the Weapon Scammers Use Against Us
It is so sad that we have a lot of scammers in the world right now. What makes it even more heartbreaking is that my country is infamous for scams, and now most of us are getting a bad reputation. One can even feel ashamed to say they are from this country.
When it comes to scams, I will not say I have never been scammed before, but it was something I doubted. I just did it for the sake of my friend.
Some years ago, I had a friend who used my bank account for arbitrage. He was a Ghanaian, and we did it every day. He often tipped me for allowing him to use my accounts. One day, he told me about a platform where I just needed to put in some money, trade, and keep winning.
I told him that I knew platforms like that, and in the end, they would shut down and take all our money. However, for his sake, I agreed to do it since he believed so much in it. I invested, and exactly what I had predicted happened. I woke up one day and could no longer see any money on my dashboard. That was the end of it.
The funniest scam happened to my late mum. May her soul rest in peace.

Sometime in 2010, early one morning, a man called her phone and claimed to be Pastor Jeremiah. He claimed that one of her relatives abroad had sent a package to her through him.
My mum was like, "Her relative? Who?"
Pastor Jeremiah told her to guess, and my mum said it must be Kunle, her cousin who lived abroad. The pastor said yes, it was Kunle.
He told her that there was a package for her and that he would be landing that day. Not forgetting that he had cut the call along the way, my mum called him back. During the call, her airtime finished, and she had to rush out to get another recharge card, even though it was raining heavily.
I had my doubts, but my mum would not listen. She believed the man until he told her that she needed to send money before the package could be released.
I told her to call Mr Kunle's elder sister, who lived in Nigeria, to confirm the authenticity of the news. She confirmed that nothing of such had been sent and that the person calling my mum was a scammer.
That was how my mum called Pastor Jeremiah and started raining curses on him for stressing her and making her waste her airtime. The pastor disconnected the call immediately when he realised he had been caught.
