The Hardest Decisions We Make as Parents

When it comes to preventive measures, especially vaccines, parents have different opinions…

When I first heard about childhood vaccines, I wasn’t too keen on my child taking them, but I wasn’t completely against it either.

The first-week immunization was fine. The one they call BCG and a few others didn’t come with any noticeable side effects. My baby didn’t react in any unusual way.

But the six-week vaccine? That one was something else.

For a good 24 hours, we had no peace of mind. The baby was fussy, weak, and just didn’t look like himself. At some point, we got really scared and had to call a nurse for advice, even though the hospital had already warned us that babies might react that way.

In the end, we gave him paracetamol and monitored him closely. Thankfully, he was fine the next day. But honestly, that experience almost made us skeptical about taking the next one.

Out of curiosity, I went on TikTok to learn more about vaccines. That is where I came across a story of a man who lost his twins.

According to him, everything started after they received their 6-week vaccines. The babies reacted badly, and sadly, it led to their deaths.

Anyone who reads a story like that would definitely think twice before vaccinating their child. And then you see people in the comment section saying they never vaccinated their kids, and they turned out fine.

In my own case, my child has received all the vaccines so far. The next one is at 9 months, and honestly, I am still not sure whether he will take it. But I am not completely against vaccines either.

For someone who has lost a child and believes it was due to vaccines, I understand why no one could ever convince them to try again. That kind of trauma is something that stays with you.

I believe parents should have the right to make their own decisions when it comes to something as sensitive as this. It is not something anyone takes lightly, especially after seeing how a child can react or hearing painful stories from others.

Because the truth is, when things go wrong, the same people who enforced it won’t be the ones to carry the pain.

Imagine losing your first child because of a decision you felt pressured to make… that is not something anyone ever recovers from.

At the same time, I understand why vaccines are encouraged and even pushed in some cases; they are meant to protect, not harm. But situations like this remind us that every child is different, and every parent’s fear is valid.

For some, culture and beliefs also play a role, and it is not always easy to go against what you have been raised to believe; some tribes forbid their children from taking injections.

In the end, I don’t think this is a simple “right or wrong” conversation. It is a deeply personal one. Every parent just wants to protect their child the best way they know how.
