If the need Arises, Can I really give First Aid

Hello learners

It is during prompts like this that we get to realize education is not a scam. First-aid treatment is one of the topics being taught in primary school. They teach us what to do and how to do it when the need arises, but before I go deep into this topic.

What is first aid?

This is the first treatment given to an injured person before the arrival of the Doctor. This is the definition we were given in primary school, and when I was also teaching in the primary sector, I gave the same definition to my pupils. It is quite easy to understand.

If we apply this to a real life situation, Let's assume while I was playing football, I had an injury and the bleeding refuse to stop, the right thing to do is to get the first aid box and bring out some of the things inside like the mentholated spirit, cotton wool e.tc to stop the bleeding and incase of headache, I can be given paracetamol or panadol too. After the bleeding stops, they can now carry me to the hospital for more medical treatment.

We were taught about first aid, the box and what to find inside but we were not taught how to apply most of this things in real life, I used to get injured alot during my teen age because I am a lover of football and all football lovers knows it comes with many injuries and sometimes it can even be so bad that you won't be able to play ball for weeks. It was during this time that I got to know how it is done by the nurse who treated me, for someone who never had injuries or follow someone who had an injury to where they are treated, they will only have the theoretical knowledge, but not how to apply it in a real situation.

Another thing I feel was not explained to us is the CPR [Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation] My teacher did not even bother to mention this, when I saw it on the television, I use to wonder why they are still kissing someone who fainted, it took a lot of time before I finally understand what was going on and that it was not what I was thinking and it is that the person was just trying to bring the other person back to life.

Out of every 50 people that stand in a place, it could be only one person or none that knows how to perform CPR. I do not know how to do it because I have never tried it before, but I know the theory part on how to do it.

The first time I gave someone the first aid treatment was years ago during the fasting period, the little boy injured his leg while playing and I helped him to stop the bleeding with some cotton wool and spirit, I took out something called `Epa Ijebu`` in yoruba, I don't know the english name to apply on it so it can heal fast. Unfortunately, I also tasted the stuff forgotten that I was fasting, and it was around 10minutes to the end of my fast, I was so pained.

Help or not to Help

If I find myself in a situation where someone is not breathing normally or maybe I went to the pool and someone was rescued while drowning and needed CPR, I won't volunteer to do it because If any bad thing happen or the victim lose his life, I am in big trouble, Nigeria police won't hear anything and may we not enter trouble while trying to be a good Samaritan.

In a situation where it involves my family, I would gladly do it knowing that if anything happens, at least there won't be any family to say I killed their son by pressing his chest and blowing air into his mouth...

Boss, for CPR I have never tried it but as for the theory...I think as far as I am concerned, everyone should try to have basic knowledge of first aid which would help in terms of emergencies. First aid should be made like compulsory for everyone to know.

Thanks boss for sharing

As long as it was not life-threatening, I would be afraid to provide first aid to anyone, as I may have the knowledge, but not the necessary qualifications.

if it is not life threatening, No reason to be scared I guess, the only time I dare not make a move is if it is life threatening

First Aid can be life saving and I thin all of us should know about it well because we don't know when it will be handy and save life. In my case I can perform CPR but in case of other first aid treatment it seems I forgot many things.

i think you will be able to do a few others, like helping to stop bleeding.

When I saw this prompt, the definition of first aid given to me in primary school came to my mind immediately and it's very similar to yours.
We were also thought to use a first aid box, I can vividly remember must demonstration done by my teacher then.

It's very important to have a knowledge about first aid, because we really don't know when we will need to save a life with the simple knowledge.

yea right.
