Free Speech Does Not Guarantee Freedom After the Speech

I have not been to many places, but I know what is going on around the world based on what I hear and see from the internet and from those who have experienced it.

I know that it cannot be the same as feeling or experiencing these things myself, but I can still relate a bit to how it is when I hear the experiences of other people.

Hate speech is speech against someone or a group that is meant to attack or dehumanize them.

A good example is racism, when some people hate certain races and are always saying bad things about them, or even throwing insults and threats towards them. This is very common around the world, especially in certain countries which I will not mention.

Another example is hate speech against certain genders or people who practice the same sexuality, which I am also against, but I would rather keep quiet than come out and start throwing hate speech at them.

I have always said it: free speech is not a good enough reason for someone to become stupid and start uttering words that were never meant to come out of their mouth.

There is free speech, but you should know that your bad words might have serious consequences, because free speech does not guarantee freedom after the speech.

In the northern part of my country, they are seriously against hate speech about their religion, and there have been cases where people have been killed because they were accused of blasphemy against their God. It was crazy and horrible to watch videos of how someone could be attacked and killed simply because they said something that was considered an insult to their religion. To the people involved, the punishment was death.

Stories like this can stir aggression on the internet for a while, but with time, people move on and the story eventually dies down.

This is how bad things can get in certain places where jungle justice is seen as a norm. I think people should be careful about what they say, even if they are free to say it, because they do not know who might take their words to the extreme.

But then, should hate speech be prosecuted by law?

Honestly, I do not really know what to say about this. I know that the laws of some countries forbid certain forms of hate speech, especially when the speech is considered to encourage hatred, discrimination or violence against a particular group.

Personally, I do not think every hateful statement should automatically become a crime. There should still be room for freedom of speech, disagreement and even criticism. However, I also believe that people should be responsible for the words they put out into the world.

If someone uses their freedom of speech to deliberately attack or dehumanize another person or group, there should be consequences where the law provides for them.

But those consequences should come through the law, not through violence or jungle justice.

You can disagree with someone's words. You can criticize them. You can report them. You can take them to court if their words break the law. But nobody should have the right to take the law into their own hands simply because they feel offended.

Maybe that is the difficult part about freedom of speech. We want the freedom to say what we think, but we also have to understand that freedom comes with responsibility.

You may be free to speak, but that does not mean you are free from the consequences of what you say.

This is it and not individuals taking laws into their hands. Just like the football world, racism is prohibited and when one gets abused, it's not in the person's power to start fighting, but allow the body to take responsibility. Unfortunately for some parts of the world, especially northern part of Nigeria, them no send, they take laws into their hands and the law can't do them anything 😂
