Allowance or No Allowance? Parenting Has No Formula

When it comes to parenting and raising kids, there is no real formula

You can do everything right, and your child may still turn out badly, while some parents who barely did enough end up with children who are disciplined and responsible. At some point, a child becomes whoever they choose to become, regardless of how they were raised.

Which brings me to the question from Hive Learners:

Should kids be given an allowance while living under their parents’ roof?

Before answering, I will use myself as an example.

Growing up, I didn’t enjoy everything I wanted, but my parents tried their best to feed me and pay my bills. I never really got an allowance. The only extra money I had came from saving part of my transport fare by lapping with friends to school.

Later on, things became tighter, and my parents started giving me the exact amount needed to lap a friend, so I had no extra money again.

That was when I started stealing little amounts from my dad — ₦50, ₦100, ₦200 — never huge amounts of money. And what did I use it for? Playing PS games.

Was it a lack of allowance that made me steal? Not really.

I became addicted to gaming, and even if I was getting an allowance, it still might not have been enough for what I wanted.

The bigger issue was that we didn’t really have enough. If my parents were more comfortable financially, I probably would have just asked for a PS console at home instead of stealing money to play outside.

So back to the main topic…

I personally don’t see anything wrong with giving kids an allowance, but alongside it, parents should teach them wisdom, savings, and money management.

A child who learns how to manage little money early may grow into an adult who can manage bigger money wisely.

Most importantly, parents should try their best to provide the basic things children need because a lack of those things sometimes pushes kids into doing what they shouldn’t do.

Allowance may not be the most important thing, but I believe it is necessary.

Some kids will save it wisely, while others may waste it. In the end, it depends on the child. That is why parents must take time to study their children and guide them properly when it comes to money and discipline.

My kids won't need allowance cos I will make sure they don't lack the necessities of life, I will provide them with what they need as long as it meets the standard of what children needs, I might surprise them once in a while with pocket money to see how they handle such money, allowance won't be mandated in my home especially if they are still under my roof.
