Adventure Is Beautiful, But Safety Is Priceless

Some people love solo travelling, but certain things stop them from trying it

I will use myself as an example. I love to explore. I am naturally curious. I enjoy discovering new places, new cultures, and new stories. But fear? Fear has a loud voice.

One of the biggest threats we face in my country is insecurity.

It is hard to fully enjoy the idea of adventure when safety feels uncertain. You can sleep as a millionaire with goods in your shop and wake up a pauper because thieves broke in and cleared everything.

A few years ago, a wealthy man wept bitterly after his gold shop was broken into. The painful part? It was located in a place with tight security. Yet it still happened. People said it must have been an insider job… but whatever it was, the damage was done.

Lives aren’t safe either. You can be in your own home, and armed robbers break in, giving you an option: your life or your property. And sometimes, they don’t even give a choice. After taking everything, they still take lives.

This is the reality many of us live with.

It is not that we don’t love adventure.

We just want the assurance that we will make it back alive, something my country, Nigeria, sadly cannot confidently affirm.

There were so many kidnapping cases last year, and it has continued into this year. Some groups, often referred to as “bad Fulanis,” stop cars on the roads, abduct victims, and then demand ransom from their families, millions upon millions of naira.

The amounts are heartbreaking. ₦50 million. ₦70 million. Even ₦100 million.

Money most families can’t raise unless they go online to beg strangers for help.

And the most painful part? It feels like nothing is being done about it by the government.

Imagine leaving your house excited for a solo trip to the eastern or northern part of the country… only to end up as another headline. Another ransom post. Another family in tears.

It is better to be safe than sorry.

That is why, for me, it is a BIG NO.

I once told a friend of mine that any trip outside Lagos State, Ogun State, and Oyo State is not something I am willing to attempt.

Call it fear.
Call it being cautious.
Call it whatever you like.

When safety is uncertain, adventure becomes a risk not everyone is ready to take.

I love exploring. I love freedom. I love the idea of seeing more of my country.

But I love coming back home alive even more.

So when people say, “Why not travel alone? Go explore!”
Understand this, it is not fear of adventure.

It is the fear of not returning home.

Exploration is beautiful. But safety? Safety is priceless.

You nailed it sir.
I would have considered solo traveling too, it would definitely be fun, but not with the current situation of this country.

Thanks for sharing.
