A Child Deserves More Than Just Being Born

Hello learners,

I once said the government should intervene when it comes to the number of children people can have. Gone are the days when our parents had six to ten children. Times have changed, and having children now requires proper planning so we do not bring them into the world only to suffer unnecessarily.

The world has become more dangerous. Killings, kidnappings, and other crimes are on the rise, but that should not stop us from having children.

As human beings, we all desire a family. One day, our children will grow up, and we will be there to protect and support one another. Having children is not the problem. The real responsibility is raising them well and ensuring they grow into responsible adults who contribute positively to society instead of becoming part of its problems.

Just last week, a woman on my street told me I should get my wife pregnant again so we could have another child and use the baby for our homecoming celebration. I immediately said, "Hell no!" I am not planning to have another child until my firstborn is at least four years old.

My reason is simple: finances. I do not have enough to comfortably care for two or three children at the moment, so I will not allow an innocent child to suffer because of my poor decisions.

People have different opinions about family planning. Some prefer having all their children within a short period, while others choose to leave a wider age gap between them.

Neither approach is wrong. The most important factor is whether you can afford it. If money were not a problem, I would probably have two or three children close together and then have my last child several years later, someone who would still be around while I grow old.

Back to the Hive Learners question, I do not think it is wise for people to keep having children they cannot properly provide for and protect in today's world. Insecurity is already a major challenge, and the cost of raising children is another burden many families are struggling with.

If one child is all you can comfortably provide for and protect from the evil of this world, then have just one. Gone are the days when people said children automatically bring blessings. In my opinion, that is a myth. What children certainly bring is responsibility. More importantly, our children owe us nothing. We chose to bring them into this world, not the other way around. They are not obligated to take care of us in old age because they will eventually have families and responsibilities of their own. If they decide to support us later in life, we should appreciate it rather than feel entitled to it.

As men, if we keep thinking about how difficult life is, many of us may not even want to get married or have children. However, these are important parts of life that we should not avoid. We just need to be realistic and have only the number of children we can comfortably raise.

Again, one child is enough for a family that is struggling financially. It is far better to raise one child properly than to have five children who all lack adequate care, support, and opportunities.

As parents, we should have only the number of children we can properly raise. While taking care of your family, do not neglect yourself. Build your life, secure your future, and prepare for old age so you will not become a burden to your children.
