One thing I have always used to console myself is that moderation will always win. Often timess we see people suffer from one ailment to another; it is as a result of the body system going overboard with certain practices that were tagged harmful.
I remember when I used to take a lot of cold beverage in fact, during these times I would load the ice tray just so I could chew or suck on the ice blocks. Notably, as harmful as that practice was to my health, I thought I was young and I had a lot of time to enjoy the moment.
Quite unfortunately, baby girl has been arrested lol. I did learn, and I did learn the hard way. So currently it’s just me sticking to cold beverages when the weather is hot and room temperature every other day.
I have also done well to stay away from ice blocks completely. So now does that mean ice and its like are bad for consumption? Not exactly, but then moderation is key.
And this brings us to Sugar.
In recent times we’ve had a lot of campaigns about sugar and how it’s bad for consumption and our health in general. In fact, I used to always say to myself that if we follow all these self acclaimed nutritherapists, we just might starve to death.
I remember one time a friend told me that we do not need to cook with salt as everything we consume has sodium. He said he doesn't cook with salt or seasoning cubes and I really did wonder how his meals would taste.
While I do understand that the taste buds adjust with what is being fed but truth be told, some practices are just punishment.
Basically, as much as we want to stay away sugar or control our intake, I do not think it deserves just as much regulation as alcohol. To me that is an extreme for something that we could just use our discretion to consume moderately.
Again, while regulations are good, they shouldn’t be stringent because sugar has its own vital role that it plays in human health, growth and development. Although studies have shown alcohol to be beneficial to the heart when consumed in moderation; it’s not as solid as the daily support that sugar gives the body.
You will know how important sugar is when you meet people battling with low blood sugar.
There was a time I was still running my restaurant, and a man came for lunch with a lady. He ordered a bottle of coke to go with his meal.
I had served them with a 50 cl bottle of cola that I had in the refrigerator. but he declined and requested a liter.
I did not have it, but I thought maybe he would go for water of that size instead. He asked if I do not have a bigger size of any drink, even if it’s a pack of juice, and unfortunately I did not.
The woman collected hers, and then the man pleaded with me to help him purchase from neighboring shops. It really didn’t make sense to me why someone would want to consume such a large quantity of coke as opposed to the normally approved size of consumption in a sitting.
Since I wanted to create a good customer relationship, I got him the bottle of Coke from a nearby shop.
The bottle of Coke was not as chilled, and the weather was super hot, but then the man didn’t mind; he opened it and gulped it down.
As amazed as I was, so was my mom, and she couldn’t hide hers, so she questioned, “I thought they said coke is bad for the health?” The man smiled and told her it is the same doctors that advised him to be taking coke in such quantity to keep his sugar level in moderation.
Moving on, it was that day I knew that indeed one man’s food is another man’s poison.
Basically, the effects of what we consume are relative. And in the grand scheme of things, these items are not in themselves dangerous or bad for the health. The question is, how are they being consumed?
