Are We Raising Smart Kids or Smartphone Addicts?

Smartphones have become a very important part of our lives, and no matter what the task is, whether it is to call someone or to see something or to search something, everyone uses a smartphone for everything, and many people depend on the smartphone itself, many people do a lot of work with it. To be honest, I am not so much used to using a smartphone because I have been using a laptop and personal computer for a long time, so due to this I have a habit of using a smartphone less, I just use it when I travel or for making calls or for some special work. Now it is not a big deal to see a mobile phone in the hands of small children, if I talk about myself, I got a phone in class 12th, it was not even a smartphone, I used to limit it at the time, I had a Nokia phone, Motorola phone, I have used many different types of brands and right now I am using a Poco smartphone, see, children should have a limit for anything.(for a certain age at least)

Due to not being able to give time to children, parents give them expensive gifts and give them expensive gadgets. Yes, those who can afford to do so do so. From childhood, they are spoiling them by giving them smartphones, smart devices, smartwatches and whatnot. And then they regret all these things later. Look, even if you have any kind of resources available, you should not make children addicted to all these things from childhood because this also has a huge impact on them, as most of us probably spend most of our time with our smartphones. Everyone uses smartphones according to their needs. Some people use it for studies, and some people use it to play games. Look, I will not say that using social media or anything else should be restricted. Look, there should be a limit for everything. If you are giving smart devices to your children for studies, then you should ensure a fixed time for it; after that, you should not give smart devices to your children. If you are able to do this, then whenever possible, limits are a good thing.

If you teach your children good habits from childhood, then perhaps you will not face much trouble when they grow up. Earlier, there were no smart devices, so people were not so used to all those things, and everyone used to go to sleep early and wake up early in the morning, but now everyone has it and while sleeping at night and waking up in the morning, they get busy in their own activities. If we are giving smart devices to children, then we should fix a time period for them, and whenever they are studying, we should give them smart devices, or sometimes when they are playing, otherwise we should not give them any kind of smart devices when they come home. There are many reasons for this; children can study. If your child wants to read digital books, then you can buy a Kindle book, through which he can study by buying the display, and everything is limited there, so you will not face any risk of any other.

I feel that smart devices should be given to children only after class 10th. Everyone's opinion can be different there. I will say this here also because look, till class 10th, the child mostly stays with you, after that, the child starts experimenting with things, and then we should give children some freedom. If you force them too much, then it also has a very big impact on them. You should do everything with a limit, and only after they go to class 10th, should they be given any kind of smart devices or if possible, you can give them smart devices even after class 12th. Yes, this seems easy to say but it is not that easy because nowadays small children use smart devices and they probably have more knowledge about smart devices than you have and if your child utilizes it for some good work like he gets some kind of education from the device, then you should not stop him in any way and if your child spends most of his time playing games in it and just seen funny videos, then you should also control them.

If you are worried about your children, then there are many tools available nowadays through which you can control their internet access. Yes, children are also very clever, but you should keep watching what the child does from time to time, and you should sit with him from time to time and talk to him so that you get to know his thinking, and you also get to know a lot about him. Well, there is no benefit in restricting anything because nowadays everything is available on the internet and nothing is hidden, you cannot hide anything, if you have an internet connection and a smart device, then you can get any kind of information, yes, one thing you can do is that you can minimize the internet access to your children or you can reduce its speed, or you can do all this by going into the settings of your Wi-Fi, there are a lot of options, if you want that your child should not consume wrong content, then you can impose restrictions and motivate him to read educational things.

Sadly a bunch of parents out there are raising "iPad kids" I think its a phenomenon nobody would've been able to expect or predict. Seeing the results of how smartphones will effect children growing up in this day and age will be concerning, I notice it with myself sometimes too. Anytime I have free time or I am browsing my mobile, I just end up on tiktok or instagram reels scrolling away video after video until I realise what am I doing? I don't actually care about a single thing I'm witnessing, it's all irrelevant and uninformative yet I am glued to it πŸ˜‚

I think I need to put the phone down more often and keep my work all computer based, save any external distractions!

Hope you are well my friend, take care!

Nowadays, children use mobile phones a lot.😁

Indeed, they are learning from the adults.

Yess absolutely.

This is very good. I don’t see any bad in allowing kids use smartphones but it must come with limit. Parents must not allow them get too addicted into using it because that will definitely turn into bad habit for them when they start growing up and not checked.

I think everything in life has to be balanced. It's not a bad thing for children to have smartphones, I think an age of around 8 to 9 years or more is a good age, but of course parents have to keep an eye on them to avoid anything wrong and also talk to their children a lot.

I think that with respect and trust everything is possible

Yes that is the way , you are already a parent so you know better how to deal with the things. Spending more time with them is good.

I try very hard to do that, whenever I can I try to do something that we can do together and leave the cell phone aside for a while. Enjoy these good moments.

You are right; children should have limits for everything, but then we have to think that the world is coming to a computer age. The only thing is that parents just have to monitor them properly (do your assignments and give me back my phone). This should be better.

0E-8 BEE

Yes for a certain age we should do that. Totally agree.

Checks and limits are essential. They can be brought in through different monitoring tools that monitor your kid’s activity on mobile phone but restricting access to mobile phone is very lethal in this age where everything is digitised

0E-8 BEE

Indeed, I will kore tools in the future. Honestly parenting is not easy 😞

I honestly relate to this so much! I also didn't get my first phone until high school, and it wasn’t even a smartphone πŸ˜‚. Now, I see toddlers swiping screens better than adults. Times have really changed!

I wish I could restrict kids from using smartphones, but in this digital world, it is kind of impossible because somehow they will get access to smartphones in various ways. As restrictions don't work, I think allowing them to use smartphones for a limited time can be justifiable, and how they use them should be monitored to avoid unwanted outcomes.
