What happens when you have to rely on your country's public health system?

The Unified Health System, known as SUS (Sistema Único de Saúde) is the Brazilian public healthcare system. Through it, a person can access medical consultations and various types of examinations, from the simplest to the most complex, all free of charge. It also provides access to medications and treatments, especially for conditions that require monthly medication, such as diabetes or HIV.

SUS, even in a complex country with a large population like Brazil, functions effectively. My family and I have used its services on several occasions for various health issues, and thanks to this system, we have been able to stay healthy and well.

I have many stories to share about the experiences my family and I have had with SUS. In all of them, we ultimately had a happy ending, but the journey to that happy ending wasn't always pleasant.

Once, on our wedding anniversary, we were getting ready to go out for dinner when my husband suddenly started sweating and feeling unwell. Within minutes, we realized he had a high fever and severe diarrhea. We often joke that this episode put our love and marriage to the test because I helped him through the entire process, even giving him a shower when his blood pressure dropped. Since we lived just two blocks away from a hospital, I walked him there, and as soon as we arrived, he received medical attention and was put in a room receiving intravenous fluids for several hours.

That's how we 'celebrated' our wedding anniversary - in the middle of summer, by the seaside, with my husband in a hospital bed receiving treatment, and me by his side. Fortunately, he recovered quickly, and received excellent care, all thanks to SUS.

However, my mother didn't have such a good experience. Three years ago, she broke her foot when a car hit her bicycle while she was cycling. The driver provided assistance and promptly took her to a hospital, where my father and I followed. When we arrived at the hospital that handled more severe cases like hers, we noticed the hallways filled with stretchers and sick patients. There were no available rooms, and sadly, my mother was among those placed on a stretcher in the hospital corridor.

She received medical attention promptly, and her leg was casted, but she had to stay there until she could undergo surgery. As you can imagine, it was a tough few days. My mother spent three weeks in this situation, with my father, me, and some family members taking turns to be with her. After three weeks, she finally had the surgery at a private hospital that had an agreement with SUS. Unfortunately, no one could accompany her, and her post-surgery experience was terrible. She thought she was going to die because she felt very groggy. Even though she had a private room in the private hospital, when she called for a nurse, they took a long time to respond. Those three days she spent there were a truly unpleasant experience for her. We could only visit for a few minutes, and then she had to deal with the loneliness on her own.

Fortunately, my mother is young; at the time, she was 53 years old, without any underlying health conditions, and she regularly engages in physical activities. In short, she is a strong woman. Six months after this experience, she was back to cycling. Thank God, everything turned out well, even though it was a complicated ordeal, SUS (the Brazilian public healthcare system) aided her. However, it underscores that the system still requires numerous improvements, particularly in terms of humanization.

After my mother went through this, I came to the conclusion that I do indeed want to achieve financial wealth one day. It's because I never want to see her go through this again, and even though SUS functions, we know that with a good private health insurance plan, everything tends to work faster and more efficiently – or at least that's how it should work.

In any case, I have much more to be thankful for regarding SUS than to criticize. It has saved me and my family multiple times, even though the process for healing within its facilities hasn't always been easy.

O Sistema Único de Saúde ou SUS, é o sistema de saúde pública brasileiro. Através dele é possível uma pessoa fazer consultas e exames dos mais simples aos mais complexos, tudo isso de forma gratuita. Também é possível receber medicação, e fazer tratamentos, caso a medicação que você necessite seja mensal, por exemplo; como alguém que tem diabetes ou HIV.

O SUS, por mais que seja gratuito num país complexo e com uma população enorme como o Brasil, funciona. Eu mesma e minha família já utilizamos seus serviços diversas vezes para diferentes problemas, e graças a esse sistema conseguimos ficar bem e saudáveis.

São muitas as histórias que posso contar de experiências que eu e minha família tivemos, em todas sempre tivemos um final feliz, porém o processo para chegarmos a esse final feliz nem sempre foi agradável.

Uma vez, no nosso aniversário de casamento, estávamos nos preparando para sair pra jantar quando meu esposo começou a suar frio. Poucos minutos depois percebemos que ele estava com febre, e logo em seguida ele teve uma diarréia severa. Costumamos dizer que esse episódio de nossas vidas colocou o nosso amor e casamento à prova LOL, porque eu o ajudei em todo o processo, inclusive a tomar banho, a pressão dele tinha caído. Como a gente morava a duas ruas de distância de um hospital, fui andando com ele até lá, assim que chegamos ele foi atendido, e ficou num quarto tomando soro por algumas horas.

E foi assim que ‘comemoramos’ nosso aniversário de casamento. Em pleno verão, no litoral, meu esposo numa cama de hospital tomando soro e eu ao lado dele. Felizmente ele ficou bem logo, foi muito bem tratado, tudo isso graças ao SUS.

Mas minha mãe não teve uma experiência tão boa assim. Há três anos atrás, ela quebrou o pé quando um carro bateu na bicicleta dela enquanto ela estava pedalando. O motorista prestou socorro e rapidamente levou ela a um hospital, eu e meu pai fomos juntos. Ao chegarmos nesse hospital em que tratava dessas questões mais graves, percebemos os corredores lotados de macas com pessoas doentes. Não havia quartos disponíveis, e infelizmente, minha mãe foi uma das pessoas que ficaram em cima de uma maca no corredor do hospital.

Ela foi atendida logo, engessaram a perna dela, mas ela teria que continuar lá até fazer uma cirurgia. Bem, como vocês devem imaginar, foram dias difíceis. Minha mãe passou 3 semanas nessa situação, enquanto eu meu pai e algumas pessoas da família nos revezamos para ficar lá com ela. Depois de 3 semanas, ela conseguiu fazer a cirurgia num hospital particular que tinha convênio com o SUS. Mas, infelizmente ninguém poderia acompanhar, e o pós cirurgia dela foi terrível, ela achou que ia morrer, pois estava muito grogue. E por mais que no hospital particular ela tivesse conseguido ficar num quarto sozinha, quando ela chamava alguma enfermeira, demoravam a chegar. Aqueles três dias que ela ficou ali, foi uma experiência verdadeiramente ruim pra ela. Só podíamos visitar por alguns minutos, e depois ela ficava sozinha tendo que lidar com a solidão.

Felizmente minha mãe é jovem, na época tinha 53 anos, não é uma pessoa que tem qualquer doença, e costuma fazer atividades físicas. Enfim, ela é uma mulher forte. Seis meses depois dessa experiência, ela já estava pedalando de novo. Graças a Deus deu tudo certo, mesmo tendo sido uma experiência complicada, o SUS a ajudou. Mas isso mostra que é um sistema que ainda precisa de muitas melhorias, principalmente na questão da humanização.

Depois que minha mãe passou por isso, eu cheguei a conclusão de que gostaria sim de alcançar a riqueza financeira um dia. Porque jamais quero vê-la passar por isso de novo, e por mais que o SUS funcione, sabemos que quando se tem um bom plano de saúde particular, tudo funciona mais rápido e de forma mais eficiente, bem, pelo menos é como deveria funcionar.

De qualquer forma, eu tenho muito mais a agradecer ao SUS do que criticar, ele já salvou a mim e minha família algumas vezes, por mais que nem sempre o processo para a cura em suas instalações tenha sido fácil.
