Alphabets Representing Lives

Education sector in Nigeria has been one filled with ups and downs of which we actually could say has brought in some emotional shift to students all around the world.

You wouldn't understand the effects of these adoptions when you're still in secondary school level and you could still enjoy the likes of seeing your 60, 65, 70 or more in your report card while those who failed are prone to see their scores in red biro indicating their score to be lesser than what is expected.

I don't think I can remember fully the way at which they use these letters but I know of 90- 100 graded as A; 70-80 graded as B; 60-70 graded as C; 50-60 graded as C2; 40-50 graded as B and 0-39 graded as E.

With the adoption of letters to grade students academically most especially in higher institutions, I can say that this issue is actually a 2-edged sword thing cos it may actually be favourable to some while its not favourable to others and it might just be a way of bringing down their whole efforts.

Imagine someone with a 40 receiving D and someone with 49 also receiving "D" because they are both still in the range of the 40. Someone with 2.00 CGPA having the same grade of lower credit with same person who struggled to get 2.59 and someone who had 3.0 placed in the same category with someone close to distinction with a difference of 1 mark that is 3.9.

It may be quite annoying to those very close to getting to the next grade and in such situations you would see the affected people grumbling and acting as if they should see the person in charge to just award him or her a slap for not adding the remaining 1. At times it might even lead to a partial feelings of blaming themselves as to how they could have tried harder in a course which could have made them escape that 1 because you see that 1 is really a life saving for many students either as a bridge to fail or to be hailed as a guru (intelligent person).

There was a course we did back then and the outcome was kind of poor that the lecturer had to initiate a bonus mark of 1 all round and with that those that were on 39 crossed to 40 and the likes. Those are the kind of scores we referred to as "let my people go!"

In a nutshell, my stand here is that the range may be reduced just so that people who put in every efforts to do better academically can actually get encouraged and their morale not tampered with when they realize they are graded with someone who scored so low because using just pass and fail might want to bring down the fire of zeal in student to study hard even though that's not a criteria to success.

Though this pass or fail method may tend to also reduce the level of competition for grades which is really taking toll on students too and that's why I said earlier that it is a 2-way thing.

Scores for these graded letters should be adjusted and I think things will be fine.
