It is true is a thing in Spain to ask for a: "Un cafe con leche en vaso, porfavor"
Honestly, I don't know why people do it.. but I have to say that I like it too :P
I think you did right, what they gave you is not a 'vaso'. As you mentioned, they were wrong. They gave you a cortado.
Wow, that sounds great, you can be proud of yourself dear! These are great achievements.
Haha, at least I ordered it exactly that way :) One of the things that went smooth first was ordering our drinks and tapas. It's simply a repetitive task and doesn't take much time to sound smooth, the challenge was in understanding the answer in case something was not available etc :)
I never really looked up what they meant by a cortado, good to know if they bring me the wrong one that I can say that I didn't order a cortado but cafe en vaso.
I really notice things move quickly now with me and also the little one. She ended her first year in the Spanish public school with a banger report card (if I may say so myself) while getting 5's and lower the first 3/4 of the school year for lengua, she managed to get her average to a 7 at the final report, which is obviously VERY good of her. We are so blessed with her tutor, she has been the best.
