The Joy of Simple pleasures

(edited)

Looking at the prompt I couldn’t help but smile, it felt like someone was eavesdropping on my conversation.

Just yesterday I was talking to my friend about the rate at which people no longer watch TV and how our parents took it upon themselves back then to make sure we had access to all our favorite TV shows even though at that time it did cost them a lot.

It’s funny how the younger me could do any and everything just to stay glued to the TV even if it meant dumping every other thing.
It was taboo not to turn on the TV in my father’s house or it could mean mass punishment but today the TV can go for days without anyone switching it on.

Back then one of the best things your parents could do for you was to make sure the TV in the house was up and running. Any appliance could go bad in the house and we the children wouldn’t be moved or affected as it didn’t concern us but not the TV.

The TV going bad could be likened to an outburst of plague in the land and as such everyone must be involved. You aren’t the one to fix it but as an ardent user it was your responsibility to constantly remind your parents to fix it and if the reminders don’t do the work, you apply pressure and this involved constantly pleading or throwing tantrums, you just have to do whatever it takes for the Tv to be fixed and when you achieved this you do the victory dance because your mission was accomplished.

Watching TV together played a major role in strengthening family bonds, once the TV was switched on there was a sort of unspoken call that beacon on everyone to gather together and you know what happens? It was Fun! Fun! And Fun.
You all get lost in the world of the movie or show you guys are watching to a point where you all can spot some similarities between the character’s behavior and some members of the family. Don’t even get me started with when you all try to act certain scenes or sing some songs from the shows or movies you all watched together and trust me it was pure bliss as nothing else ever mattered.

I miss watching TV with my siblings heck I miss when my only problem in life back then was missing my favorite show on Disney Channel or Nickelodeon.

Right now our mobile phones have replaced Televisions as we can watch almost everything on our phones instead of sitting in front of a big screen.
I miss running back home to meet my favorite shows before they air not tapping a few buttons on my phone and watching them as nothing beats the level of urgency or the sense of fulfillment that comes with getting home in record time and slumping on your couch, smiling sheepishly and tuning in to your favorite show and enjoying every bit of it while enjoying it with your favorite people as well.

I miss remote fights and when channel preferences could wage war between my siblings and me, I miss feeling all giddy and victorious whenever I had the TV remote and every other person was my subject while I ruled like the Queen that I was with no questions asked.
Today the remote is somewhere in the living room lying peacefully without being used for a long time.

Hehehehhe it feels so great to be born back then when everything was simple, communal, and easy while I celebrate how fast the world is evolving I still miss those simple things of life that made my childhood memorable and fun.

Nobody watches TV anymore these days. I was, and still am a huge fan of Nickelodeon, Disney Channel and Cartoon Network. Those channels made my childhood.
You know, I never actually though about it but yes, I miss the feeling that came with rushing back from school and praying not to have missed your favourite shows. That was peakk!!!
This your post brought so much memories of my TV. I'm glad I came across it
