Why South Williamsport?

After four games per day for the past couple of weeks, it feels a bit weird that there is only two games being played in the Little League World Series today. On top of that, the fact that there are zero games being played tomorrow is even crazier.

I was talking to @mrsbozz last night and I was sharing with her the facts that I posted about yesterday concerning South Williamsport and the LLWS. Her first question was why Williamsport. Which of course was the one thing that I didn't bother to look up or write about yesterday.

I did a bit of Googling this morning and it turns out the main reason the event is held in Pennsylvania is because that is where the Little League originated. Some guy though it would be cool to have a league where youth could play baseball and thus the Little League was born.

So there you go!

I've gotta believe for a town of only about 6000 people there is a large number of hotels to accommodate the 500,000 people that come into town for the series each summer. It makes you wonder what they do during the other 11 months of the year.

I mean it's possible they bring in enough revenue in this one month to cover them for the whole year, but who really knows. It's crazy to think about the economics of it all.

As I mentioned, we had four games yesterday in the tournament. The southeast beat the Midwest 7 to 6 in a pretty thrilling game to eliminate the midwest from the tournament. I was watching that game and it was pretty exciting with South Dakota facing South Carolina. In the winners portion of the bracket we had Metro beating Mountain 7 to 3 and dropping Mountain down into the losers portion of the bracket for an elimination game today against the Southeast.

On the International side of things we had Asia-Pacific beating Latin America 7 to 3. That moves Latin America down into the elimination portion of the bracket where they will face The Caribbean today after that team from Aruba eliminate the Japan team 3 to 0 yesterday.

Saturday we will see Metro and Asia-Pacific face the two teams that don't get eliminated in the games today. Then, on Sunday we will see the final game between the top teams from the International and US side. Right now it is looking like a showdown between Asia-Pacific and Metro, but you never know!

The Southeast isn't going to go down without a fight and the team from Aruba has shown that they have a lot of talent and grit. It will be exciting to see how it all plays out!
