Spots For Off Timing Meals - Happy Kampong Seafood At Jalan Malu Malu

Good day everyone, as some of you whom I've interacted more within the Hive community might know, I run a photography business and because of this business, I do have rather awkward meal times especially in the weekends where there are various events and activities where clients hire me to cover their events or setup a photo/videobooth at their event locations. Typically, the events run at their meal times so whenever I finish tearing down my setup or pack my equipment, it is typically 9pm and beyond which is so much later than typical meal times.

And because of this, there will be limited locations that I can find food (excluding fast food outlets like McDonalds, KFC etc). But I am thankful to still be able to find a decent food near my place as this restaurant only closes at 11pm. And in particular today, I ended my event at 9pm, packed and returned home to pick my wife to have dinner together and by the time, it was already 10pm.

In Singapore, typical eating places close at approximately 9.30pm and indeed makes it hard for people like me to be able to find nice and comforting food especially after running an event. When discussing where to eat, we didn't had much choices, so quickly headed to this place to have our dinner.

To be honest, if you do not stay in this area, you probably have a hard time finding this place as it is nestled in a deep end of a road that is less accessed which tells us that this eating place can survive at such a location due to the quality of the food they served and also many returning customers.

Not a fanciful eating place with air condition and all, but a nice cozy corner with ample seating places. Just as we arrived at 10pm, it is still filled with people and many just started ordering.

And so we ordered something light so that we will not be too full till it affects our sleep. So let's look at what we've ordered one by one.

Stir Fried Beef Hor Fun

This is a dish that looks seemingly to prepare but contrary to what it looks like, to do this dish well, a very good control on the frying wok is needed. The reason is that, the heat must be evenly spread out to ensure the Hor Fun (or commonly known as rice flat noodles) is well cooked and the beef is cooked to the right tenderness without becoming overcooked and make it a chore to chew on it. A sunny side up egg is added to make it even more nutritious along with the vegetables and beef within the dish. To also note, there is a nice light charring on the whole dish which elevates the taste much more.

Silverfish Fried Rice

The silverfish in this dish is being fried to golden brunch and a joy to bite on with that light salted crunch. This is my wife's favourite dish to order here. Another seemingly simple dish but to do well, the rice must be well stir fried and the rice should be well defined and none should stick and clump together. Similar to the beef hor fun, we also added a sunny side up egg to make it more complete. A nice mix of diced vegetables and char siew meat being fried together to make up the overall dish well.

Stir Fried Kailan with Roast Pork

This is my cheat code dish to order as it contain greens, mushroom and also roast pork. So basically it has almost everything and the price of this dish is more vegetable price yet we are able to get some roast pork in it. Just a simple stir fry and they ensured the kailan did not have any bitter taste which is nice to munch on. Some places do not know how to handle kailan and end up at the moment of biting, the strong bitter taste just overwhelm you and you will probably just give up eating it. Simple, loads of ingredients and it is nice and comforting.

I am so glad that Happy Kampong Seafood closes at 11pm, allowing me and my wife to have a hearty meal after wrapping up an event and not going famished into night feeling hungry. I am really blessed to have such an eating place that serve really good food at very good pricing and that is why even at 10pm, it is still very packed. Such gems are great to have in the neighbourhood and we should continue to give them our support so that their business can continue to do well and serve the residents in this area.
