A New Gem Found In The Heartlands - Taiwanese Night Market Styled Western Food

Just as I was having dinner with a couple of Taiwanese colleagues whom came over to assist my team on the new site startup, I recalled that I recently had a very nice Taiwanese Night Market Styled western food which was found in the neighbourhood and would like to share with the community. So let's get going.

Night Market Food
If you've been to Taiwan, you would have probably see such a scene below with loads of push carts and stall owners frying/grilling all kind of delights.

And typically these foods are really nicely done, savoury and makes you really satisfied after you have them. While there might be similar attempts in Singapore to replicate this taste, I find that most of them are a far cry from the actual night market food found in Taiwan. And so whenever I visit Taiwan, night markets are something that I will not miss no matter how busy or packed my schedule is.

Night Market Styled Western Food into Singapore

While I crave for these night market food, in a particular coffeeshop near my work place, a Taiwanese Night Market Styled Western Food stall had opened. And my understanding from doing my research is that this stall is opened by a couple, husband is a Taiwanese and ex hotel chef, wife is an ex flight stewardess from our national carrier.

This is a place where I can relieve the taste of the night market where elements of how night market food is prepared had been added into the western food they serve.

First up, black pepper ribeye steak. This was what I ordered. One can chose between pasta or rice and at that moment I was craving for some pasta so pasta it was. A very nicely medium grilled steak that is so moist on every bite and together with the black pepper sauce. It just tasted so good. The overflowed sauce going onto the pasta also elevated the taste of it as well making it so nice to complement the beef. This sauce really has the element of those push carts in the night market. There is a grilled egg and corn to accompany the food which is really awesome! Neighbourhood price, authentic good quality steak with the taste of Taiwan Night Market and most importantly, heartland prices which will not burn a big hole in your pocket.

Next is the grilled chicken chop that my wife ordered. Similar to my ribeye steak, this chicken chop is grilled really well and locking in all the moisture, topping off with the Taiwan styled BBQ sauce, a delight to every bite. Wife was lost for words with this amazing dish and all she said was, "Wow, feels like we are back in Taiwan." Side dishes were similar to mine and she also loved the pasta.

Last item to share but this is the most important item. Night Market Styled crispy fried chicken or 盐酥鸡 is a very familiar dish to people whom have visited Taiwan as it can be found easily and standard is very consistent throughout with a distinct way of preparing it.

While the frying is an important aspect to ensure the chicken does not come up dried but with locked moisture, the key is actually the sprinkled on chilli powder and the basil leaves that elevate the flavour of this simple dish. I found that feeling and savour every piece that I ate.

I am really thankful to be able to finally find a stall that can really match the taste to the night market food that I had in Taiwan. Portions were awesome and most important it is really affordable. And with it being near to my office, this will be a place that I will come by frequently whenever I have that craving for it.
