A Key To Happiness

The key to happiness is to realize that you are in complete control of how happy you are.

Doesn't it amaze you how two people in the same situation react differently? One may vent and curse, while the other remains calm and happy. It's not because the other isn't affected as much, but because one understands better that he is in complete control of how happy he is, and his reaction determines the outcome. This is what makes the difference: our choices.

Happiness is not tied to possessions, nor is it tied to the events that happen around us. People misconstrue wealth to be the key to happiness. It may add to what makes us happy, but it's not what makes us happy. Even the rich cry. Happiness and wealth have little to nothing in common; the joy from wealth is sometimes only temporary. The key to happiness is to realize that you are in complete control of how happy you are. It isn't how much you have, but the ability to respond differently to events because you understand you are the author of what happens around you.

The key isn't tied to your parents, friends, society, or the government. Sometimes we may be hasty to blame something for our lack of happiness. We love the blame game because we feel something should take the fall for our sadness, and often we exclude ourselves from the picture. Nothing would change if we don't first come to the realization that we are the author of our happiness—nobody and nothing but you. Our response to every event equals the outcome we get.
