The largest conference in computer vision - CVPR

Today I would like to tell you about an amazing situation that happened to me literally today 24.03, I managed to get a trip to attend the world's largest computer vision conference. Yesterday I did not know anything about such a possibility, but people from the Gdańsk University of Technology informed me about the possibility of registration and a potential trip, and today it was confirmed and already paid to participate. This is such an amazing event because it will be my first time in the United States and everything will be paid for! I can honestly say that I did not expect that it will be useful for me to participate in the AI TECH project, which allows educating people related to artificial intelligence, because I treat it as a hobby, but thanks to this I can fulfill my little dream.

What is CVPR?

CVPR is the premier annual computer vision event comprising the main conference and several co-located workshops and short courses. With its high quality and low cost, it provides an exceptional value for students, academics and industry researchers. This year it will be held between June 19 and 24 in New Orleans. When I said earlier that this is one of the biggest events I said yes because in past years it has had over 9,000 attendees on-site and 180 different brands such as:

  • Amazon
  • Apple
  • Intel
  • Meta
  • Motional
  • Sea
  • Adobe
  • Appen
  • Baidu
  • Bosch
  • Furiosa
  • Neural magic
  • Activeloop
  • Sony
  • SuperAnnotate
  • Tesla
  • Voxel51

And many more, even Disney!

Why is this an amazing opportunity?

This trip is not only about seeing one of the states, but it is also an opportunity to attend Workshops and Tutorials. During this time you will have the opportunity to learn the latest in ai technology and see some of the best scientists in the world working together for a few days to create and present amazing work. Below are some of the most promising activities at the event.

1. The Waymo Open Dataset Challenge.

This workshop aims to gather researchers and engineers from academia and industry to discuss the latest advances in perception for autonomous driving. During this event, participants will present their achievements and compare them with other participants. Participants will be tasked with the following activities:

  • Motion prediction challenge: Given agents' tracks for the past 1 second on a corresponding map, predict the positions of up to 8 agents for 8 seconds into the future. We're also introducing a new metric, named 'soft mAP', to better capture model performance.
  • Occupancy and Flow Prediction: Given agents' tracks for the past 1 second on a corresponding map, predict the bird's-eye view (BEV) occupancy and flow of all currently-observed and currently-occluded vehicles for 8 seconds into the future. Read our paper to learn more about the problem definition and Waymo's work on occupancy and flow prediction.
  • 3D Semantic Segmentation: Given one or more lidar range images and the associated camera images, produce a semantic class label for each lidar point.
  • 3D Camera-only Detection: Given one or more images from multiple cameras, produce a set of 3D upright boxes for the visible objects in the scene.

Interestingly, the winner will receive $15,000 in cash!

2. 5th Workshop on Computer Vision for Fashion, Art, and Design

Artificial intelligence, as most people know, is not only a science but also an art, which is developing day by day through the use of some of the most advanced networks such as GANs. At this event, anything related to the use of artificial intelligence in fashion, art, and design will be allowed, and I can't wait to see what ideas the participants come up with!

3. International Challenge on Activity Recognition (ActivityNet)

Now, something I'm passionate about which is using artificial intelligence to train models to recognize activities performed by subjects. During my engineering thesis, I created a system to check the correctness of exercises performed in the gym, such as squats, push-ups, and others. I'm also curious if similar things will be presented here, or if the participants will focus more on presenting the creation of the most specialized systems to detect given activities, instead of their correctness.

I could go on and on, but I do not want to bore you so I will also mention that during the whole event there will be about 180 different companies that will be doing their own exhibitions and looking for future employees. This fact also affects the fact that it is probably time to prepare a small CV to see, even just to check whether such people would be interested in working with me. And maybe even something more will come out of it and I will get permission to work remotely from Europe. And by the way, Europe will be my furthest trip.

What's beyond the conference itself?

Here comes another reason, the trip to the United States, many of you may live in the states, but for a person from Europe, it is to see another world. After all, who wouldn't want to see a place where everything is twice as big as in other countries! Now to show you how far it is, I checked the distance and came up with 8450km or about 5240 miles and the flight will take about 15 hours. I wonder of course if there will be connecting flights. Another thing I'm wondering is what I'm going to see, as I've heard New Orleans is an amazing city with delicious food, and as a foodie, I'll have to try everything!
