Some Silver from Venezuela & Angel Falls

There is a jewelry shop not too far from my home that I visit occasionally. Not to buy jewelry, but to check out the owner's side business. He buys silver and gold which gets shipped off to a refiner to melt it down. Over the years I've got to know the owner well enough that he hangs onto coins he thinks I might be interested in purchasing from him.

Several years ago someone had sold him some coins from Venezuela. They weren't the nicest coins I had ever seen, but they were silver. So I bought them all, and the best part is he only charges me spot silver price since he's not a coin dealer. The coin of the day came out of that bunch, and I believe I had to scan it to get a decent image. This is a 1/2 Bolivar coin from 1935:

About the coin:

One very interesting fact about this coin is that it was minted in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, US at the Philadelphia Mint. In earlier years they also used the French Mint to produce them, but in 1935 they all came from Philadelphia. They produced one million that year, so it's not a very rare coin by any means. But it does have about $2.44 worth of silver in it, and that's always a good thing. The silver percentage is kind of odd at 83.5%, but the coins are more durable with less silver content. The overall value of the coin is maybe $3 or $4.

For a 90 year old coin it still looks pretty good!

I believe it was @yusmelys or @cositav that mentioned Angel Falls in Venezuela. Since the coin today is from there let's talk about the waterfall, why not?

Angel Falls is considered the world's tallest uninterrupted waterfall. The falls measure 3,212 feet (979 meters) which is very impressive. The river that flows over the falls is the Río Kerepacupai Merú which is a tributary of the Orinoco River. The falls got it's name from American aviator Jimmie Angel who was the first person to fly over the falls in 1933.

On a subsequent flight he attempted to land above the falls but the wheels of the plane sunk into marshy soil and was unable to be flown off the ridge. The party of four on the plane had to hike out on foot and it took them 11 days to reach civilization. The plane was on top of the falls for the next 33 years before being removed by helicopter

Needless to say, it is a very remote area. It would be a awe inspiring place to visit, but helicopter would be the only reasonable way unless you like long hikes through the jungle. I would pass on that! But a very beautiful waterfall and the tallest in the world.
