A Beautiful Morgan Silver Dollar From 1921
I have been a coin collector ever since I was a child. At first I started with pennies, because they were cheap and there were always a bunch laying around. As I grew older I began to collect silver coins, and my favorite was always the Morgan dollar. Maybe because they were so old and had such a detailed design. But they were also a coin used in the Wild West which was a fascinating time in US history.
It's been awhile since I shared a Morgan, so today I felt inspired to do so after @silversaver888 shared her new acquisitions of the 2025 pure silver Morgan dollars. I'm not sure when I picked this particular coin up, it's not my best one, but it is pretty and was produced in the last year that they were made as circulating coins.
About the coin:
While this coin isn't in perfect condition, it's still nice. It was minted in the Philadelphia Mint in 1921 which is the last year the coin was minted for circulation as I previously mentioned. That year they produced 44,690,000 of them in Philadelphia alone, making this coin very far being rare. The melt value on the silver today is $34.47 with silver at $44.44 per Troy ounce as of the time of writing up this post.
To a collector is would go for considerably more. The charts say around $60+, but I doubt they are accounting for the recent surge in silver prices. That being said this might go for in excess of $80. It sure looks good for being 104 years old doesn't it? I doubt I'll hold up that well!
The Morgan Dollar
This coin is an American icon that still is one of the most collected coins in the United States. Produced from 1878 until 1904, and again briefly in 1921, these coins were common in the Wild West and the southern United States. They could have been spent in saloons, brothels, bet in poker games, and most anything else you could imagine. Holding one in your hand is to hold history, if only they could tell the tales of where they have been! Maybe they were held by legends like Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday, Billy the Kid, Jesse James...?
George T. Morgan designed the coin inspired by a local school teacher in Philadelphia named Anna Willess Williams. He felt her profile was perfect for the coin and immortalized her in the form of Liberty.

Today the design is once again being used to produce non circulating pure silver coins by the US Mint. Starting in 2021 to commemorate the last year of mintage of the original coin, it was so popular it has become a yearly production available from the mint. It really would be nice if the US would start producing beautiful coins once again and replace the old dead dudes club. The US was founded on Liberty, not hero worship, but that's just my opinion.

My favorite coin for sure. Maybe one day I’ll be able to afford completing my graded MS64 Morgan Philadelphia strike set. I’m only missing 3 of them, but of course they are the three most expensive 1893, 1894, and 1901.

Beautiful coin. One of my favorites as well. And I like having coins with some wear on them, so I can fiddle with them like poker chips.
I like it too when you can handle the coin without feeling guilty. Coins like this one you can't do that without reducing the value significantly, but the worn down ones you can hold in your hand. Plus the worn ones have so much more history, they may have been used in markets, saloons, brothels, and all sorts of other places. The shiny ones haven't seen nearly that kind of action! lol

My first silver coin that I actually purchased for one dollar was a 1921 Morgan!😇☺️
Last year minted for circulation! My favorites will always be the Carson City coins, especially when they ended up with the deep mirror proof like background... So sexy!
The 1921 is one of the best for collectors to get started though, it's usually cheap in lower grades!

I wonder who they would consider to have a perfect profile today to put on a new coin. It would be interesting to see. This mild mannered school teacher probably never thought she would become so iconic!
I'm sure she didn't but has become one of the most iconic images in American coinage. Concepts of beauty change with time and Liberty would likely be portrayed much less Romanesque than the Morgan. I really would love to see our coinage return to works of art rather than the same repetitive boring coins we see year after year.
It would be interesting to see a new depiction of Liberty though!
I agree with that, it would be pretty cool. Probably the only real change we have gotten is the state quarters and the gold piece with Harriet Tubman or whoever it was on it. I thought those were fairly decent. I'm also not opposed to moving away from historic figures and returning to a concept like "liberty". A reimagining of lady liberty might not come out the way we hope these days...
