Financial & health Illiteracy: Pregnancy complications are often underated

(edited)

So I am tagging my bro, @burlarj because he has a partner/married, he is a smart man, and I think he'll like the
rich knowledge I have shared in this post.

I recently saw a list on Twitter of medical debts in various countries. It is interesting that the United States ranks first in terms of people with the most medical debt.

Contrary to the ideas promoted in Hollywood films, where people are treated with the best medical care and attended to by teams of doctors, nurses, and other medical professionals, the enormous cost, debts, and expenses appear to have received little attention.

Of course, it is a working system, and nothing beats it, but the idea of charity sold by these films leads people to live in Dreamland while ignoring the exorbitant cost of care.

The US Is not a Happyily-ever-after

The United States is one of those countries with a no-nonsense Medicare policy, and Americans are used to it, which is why they spend so much money on insurance.

There are countries that enjoy the luxury of cheaper and freer medical care, and it will be difficult for these people to adjust to a place like the United States, especially if they are already accustomed to free or cheaper care and/or live with a medical condition.

Nigeria is one of such places where the cost of medical care is insanely expensive, even though the care is as that of 1980, and not efficient, unfortunately we have a lot of individual health illiterates in Nigeria, and that's because most people are uneducated and hardly proactive when it comes to their health.

The body is a machine that requires care, no matter how healthy you are; however, I understand that the illusion of good health leads people to believe they do not need health care. I guess this is the only benefit of having a chronic or lifelong medical condition: you become a mini doctor or researcher, especially when it comes to finding a cure, staying alive, or even better management.

Financial pregnancy uncertainties

I recently saw a video of a man who took his pregnant wife to the hospital; apparently, they refused her medical care because the man was unable to pay the hospital bill. However, I heard the woman died of preeclampsia, a very serious complication that kills pregnant women.

Preeclampsia does not occur suddenly; if the woman had received antenatal care, the doctor could have detected her high blood pressure in the second or third trimester and likely advised them to opt for a cesarean section before she reached 39 weeks.

Pregnancy is something you have a lot of time to prepare for, and sometimes you have to do your best to avoid some of the complications that may arise, which you can do by being proactive.

To begin, a man whose wife is pregnant should not be playing woody woody; instead, they should arm themselves with information, symptoms, signs, and so on.

Your Penis Could Kill Your Wife

Unfortunately, for some Nigerian men, their natal care ends as soon as they withdraw their penis and their semen has done the job, which is why most women die: a lack of knowledge, financial preparations, and care, as well as a careless husband.

A woman in prolonged labour can die with the child, so even if there were no complications before the due date, complications on the due date can still kill the woman.

1000551261.jpg

This is why people need to be proactive.

I partially blamed the man because he had plenty of time to plan for his wife's care before she became pregnant. I disagree that there is anything like a "mistake pregnancy." You are aware that the 0.1% chance of pregnancy occurs as soon as the semen leaves the penis, regardless of whether she is ovulating.

Some women are fertile, the ovulation shenanigans might not work with them.

You can be lucky it's not pregnancy, but what if pregnancy occurs, and you're financial incapable, what becomes the future of the unborn child and that's if the mother survives the pregnancy phase?

A man must understand that there is a 50% chance that a woman will not have a vaginal delivery, which is why you should always predict a Caesarean section regardless of whether the woman has previously had high blood pressure or not.

She could have pelvic issues, or placenta previa, but many will not know since the woman hardly hardly does any form of pregnancy scan.

I also noticed that this man already had two children; perhaps they were fortunate that the first two pregnancies went smoothly; perhaps a third child will be a lucky charm; however, it would have been preferable for them to simply obtain family planning until they were financially capable of affording a third child, but no! and now the woman is dead.

Conclusion

The world requires more financially literate men and women, particularly in places like Nigeria. Many women are financially irresponsible, and marrying a man who is equally so should be considered haram. Of course, uncertainties occur regardless of how well we prepare, but even in these cases, we can be confident that we have done our best.

Even if you do not have a medical condition, do not assume you are immune; you could still be a dunce when it comes to health education, which could be fatal. Take control, especially if you have the opportunity to do so.

The fact you remember me after seeing the news about the pregnant woman got me laughing ๐Ÿ˜…, so you already saw a vision she is pregnant too, anyway you are right๐Ÿ˜…

I was contemplating if i should make a post about it cos i saw the news on facebook too, many people are blaming the hospital but i blame the man instead... the reason why the hospital didn't admit her could be because of past experience, some doctors even shared their experience in the comment section of how they treated people without deposit and they end up running away or staying too long in the hospital because they could not pay up and bills keep piling up....

I blame the man because how can he think of impregnating the woman again after 2 kids and he is not financially stable, it just does not make sense to me....

I know pregnancy should not be taken lightly and the proper health care should be done, i do not hope for any complications but i will make sure to be prepared for it... i took her to hosp today to reg for antenatal but we could not complete the process for a reason best known to them, so we were asked to come back tomorrow to complete the registration, thanks man๐Ÿ‘‹

Lool not really, I was thinking that perhaps someday she might be pregnant and that's why I decided to post and share this knowledge, since I have a bit of medical knowledge upstairs. Congratulations my man now the journey begins lol. I should have tagged dwanye16 too who now recently has a wife loool. I want to be you people's medical consultant ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

I wasn't talking about anything in general, I just felt to share the knowledge with a man who has a wife lol. I know you're a chief ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

I blame the man and not the hospital. He already should know that hospitals will never accept to do the procedure because of money. I don't want to believe he's a dumb man, and unfortunately for him, he never choose to see any uncertainty that might prospectively take place.

so we were asked to come back tomorrow to complete the registration, thanks man๐Ÿ‘‹

I wish you the best with it. Plus, if you have questions, you can ask me, I have some knowledge upstairs, and I pray for a smoothness of journey for the whole 39 to 40 weeks.

oh I see, congrats to Dwayne too, this journey is tedious but i believe it is because we are not yet used to it lol

Thanks man, if I have a question, will ask! hopefully all goes well, i hate complications xd

This is one of the things I often say. 9months is so gracious of God to give us to raise the funds that can at least cater for delivery.
Moreover, pregnancy itself is not cheap. The scans and several other test that would be carried out, not to mention even complications.

Antenatal care should never be left for a few, all pregnant women should by all means, even if it be free take it seriously.

Sadly our Senators and House of reps are busy passing useless bill instead of moving for free antenatal attention for all pregnant women.

@josedicus you won't believe it if I told you that just a urinalysis strip which was about 100 naira a few years ago may be a 1000 naira now could have detected that proteinuria (presence of protein in the urine) and quick measures could have been taken to save both mother and child.

So sorry for their loss, but this is a call to everyone, the govt won't do everything for you, do some thing and at the right time.

0.00056756 BEE

Unfortunately the government will not do anything and it's very sad. It's the more reason why the man should have planned better. Pregnancy is by choice and if you already have children, it's important to prepare for whatever child you're willing to have.

It's true that hospital and tests have gone up recently. I've not seen my hematologist in close to a year because the cost of consultations have gone up. Unfortunately people don't choose their genetics, but they can choose to, or not to have a child and that's why I seem to angry with the man; they could have planned better.

Sadly tho, he ll marry another soon and the folly may go on. God help us.

Yes, I believe so too. Responsibility and accountability should be well ingrained in the society.

This man committed a crime and like you said, with his phallus and an ignorant mind.

I pray we do not fall into ignorance in any aspect of our lives.

Pregnancy is not an inexpensive thing, and medical care will be needed all along. If you are a couple and married you should be planning and saving towards that expense if you are planning on children. But the guys who are out there for casual sex and don't use birth control are irresponsible. In most countries the father ends up paying his share in child support once he is proven the father even if it was a one night stand. People need to be sexually responsible and those guys should at least use a condom. It's not failproof, but it's better than no protection at all.

That's not a problem only in Nigeria... However, the medical system is expensive and women dying because they can't afford to get proper prenatal care is horrendous. Or if you have a chronic disease and no access to medical care or medication it can be a death sentence as well. I really wish there was a world wide solution to help all those in need of care. Doctors Without Borders do help but are very limited in numbers.

0.00056711 BEE

This particular man already had two children. If I had kids already and didn't have a dime for another child, I'll make sure to plan with my wife, perhaps she can have pills or maybe condoms are an option.

Pregnancy is something we can control, so we can choose not to.
In Nigeria the one-night standers always escapes and leaves the woman to bear the consequences. There are no law that catches one nighties, and this is why people indulge in that a lot in Nigeria. So there are many children without an identified father because the father chose to abandon the mother. Sometimes the one night-women go ahead to suffer depravity because of things like this, and that's if they have people who are willing to pay their hospital bills and all that .

0.00029713 BEE

That's a shame... One night can ruin another's life forever, that really sucks!

This was a really nice read, and the topic is a bit sensitive. I feel so sad for the deceased and her family; I'm sure they didn't expect complications since they were "already used to it." But that is not an excuse!

Antenatal care is very important. I work in a laboratory so I know that scanning isn't even as expensive as people make it out to be. It doesn't take much time, either. So, what could be stopping them from doing it?

Also, I think most couples do not really understand family planning; they need enlightenment, which should probably be done during their marriage classes or through individual research.

Is God that protects but we need to put some efforts too.

Thank you for this informative post, @josedicuss.

0.00049476 BEE

Yeah, sensitive, but it's a topic that deals with life and should be addressed. Pregnancy is a journey that people should understand the severity of its potential complications, and try as much as possible to address it. The older generation were careless in so many ways despite having the informations to be proactive.
Unfortunately it's the 21st century and many people do not have basic knowledge.

I've done a lot of scans and blood tests in my life, and some of them can be cheap

Thanks for the comment.

When i saw the video of the man and his pregnant wife, i felt so bad for the woman, I hate seeing women go through such pain in the name of pregnancy. In this case, I blame both the man and the pregnant wife.

If she had gone for antenatal check-up, i believe the doctor would've dictated what was wrong, but nothing like that happened. Now back to the husband, some men have the custom to abandon their wives immediately they find out she's pregnant. The man had a whole 9 months to prepare for delivery.

This should be a lesson to everyone out there, both married couples, pregnant women and single people.

0.00042124 BEE

Yes, they both share the blame, but I figured that since they both already have two children, they feel this one will probably be clockwork with no issues maybe just like before, unfortunately all pregnancy are not the same and anything can happen and that's the harshness of reality: the previous events doesn't guarantee anything.

Yes, a lesson indeed.

0.00000000 BEE

I think it's a man's responsibility to step up when their wives are pregnant. No excuses for not planning ahead, money and doctor visits matter. That poor woman didnโ€™t have to die like that, this is too sad

0.00036053 BEE

Exactly, the woman didn't have to die like that. They could have done something and taken quick actions, unfortunately I think the man was completely ignorant.

0.00000423 BEE

I agree with you it was a matter of ignorance

0.00000000 BEE

Oh my goodness, I hate to hear that a woman died out of pregnancy complications. For God's sake, people should learn to be intentional when it comes to pregnancy care! People should be financially ready for such journey they are embarking on to avoid losing a life carelessly, otherwise go for family planning if you are not ready to face all that comes with pregnancy.

It's a pity the woman lost her life due to finance. Something that cs should have saved her life. This thing is just paining me personally

I hope others will learn from this and take responsibility.

Thanks for sharing, Joe!

0.00036008 BEE

I think they didn't really take proactive steps to understand the woman's medical conditions and to understand that she could have died if nothing was done. This i was I advice any would-be mother to take time and learn about their pregnancy and not understanding that complications are possible if medical attention isn't given on time..

All in all, they should have handled it quicker or better, it's such a sad situation.

A lot of women die from negligence during pregnancy, do I even need to mention the many scenes Iโ€™ve witnessed with husbands who actually had nine months to prepare for the baby running helter skelter at the verge of birth. Am from Nigeria and I must say that the health facilities here are way behind efficacy thatโ€™s why the rich would always fly their loved ones abroad for medical care and itโ€™s very pathetic that the government doesnโ€™t care so much. The rate of pregnancy women death toll is on the rise

0.00035974 BEE

These things happens a lot in Nigeria and it's safe to say the negligence comes from the lack of awareness, maturity, education and exposure. So pregnant women are prone to diet because of lack of preparations.
Apart from going overseas, if people do the basics when it comes to pregnancy then the risks of unforeseen circumstances are reduced. Just basic education and a few others precautions.

some men just enjoy the moment and blame the woman when unwanted pregnancy occurs saying "she knows her fertile window isnt she smart why then did she allow herself to get pregnant. as if shes the one that impregnated herself. I just think the responsiblity of a pregnancy should be both man and women besides to only result to sex is pregnancy and every one knows that.

Wait a min Burlarj is your blood brother?
