If you've published on Hive lately and checked your pending payout, you may have noticed something: the author half came out as HIVE + Hive Power, with no HBD in the mix. Normally you'd expect roughly a 50% HBD / 50% HP split on the author's share. Right now, that HBD slice is missing.
This is not a bug, and nobody skimmed your rewards. It's the blockchain protecting itself, working exactly as designed. Let me explain it the way I wish someone had explained it to me — slowly, like we're two frogs on a lily pad.
HBD (Hive Backed Dollars) is Hive's stablecoin. It's meant to be worth about $1, and it stays sane because the chain can convert 1 HBD into $1 worth of HIVE.
But there's a catch: if there's too much HBD floating around relative to the size of the HIVE economy, that promise gets shaky. So the chain watches a number called the debt ratio:
Debt ratio = HBD market cap ÷ HIVE market cap
(Fun detail: HBD sitting in the treasury at @hive.fund is excluded from this calculation, so the raw total supply number you might see isn't the number that matters.)
The hard ceiling — the debt limit — is 30%. As the ratio climbs toward it, the chain starts pulling levers to protect everyone. One of those levers is the one biting right now.
When the debt ratio gets uncomfortably high, Hive stops minting new HBD. The "print rate" drops to zero. Any post rewards that would have been paid as HBD are instead paid as HIVE (which you receive as liquid HIVE + Hive Power).
Why is this smart? Imagine the alternative. HIVE price dips → the chain keeps printing HBD to pay rewards → that extra HBD dilutes HIVE further → the debt ratio climbs higher → so it prints even more... That's a debt spiral, and it's exactly how stablecoins die. The print-rate pause is the circuit breaker that stops the spiral before it starts.
So when your reward shows up as HIVE instead of HBD, that's the seatbelt doing its job.
Two things bring the ratio back down and switch HBD minting back on:
Neither of these is a promise or a prediction — they're just the two dials the system turns. When the ratio drops back under the threshold, normal HBD minting resumes and your author rewards go back to the familiar HBD/HP split.
Hive gets criticized for being "complicated," but moments like this are actually the system showing its homework. A lot of chains would happily keep printing their stablecoin into a death spiral to keep the rewards flowing and the vibes high. Hive would rather pause the printer, pay you in its base asset, and burn supply with treasury money until things are healthy again.
That's the kind of boring, honest plumbing worth understanding before you understand anything else. Know how you get paid before you worry about how much.
Always verify the live numbers yourself — the HBD monitor at hive.ausbit.dev/hbd shows the current debt ratio and whether the print rate is still paused. Don't take my ribbit for it.
Stay liquid, stay curious, and feels good man.
Not financial advice. No token here is a promise of profit. This is an educational post about how the Hive protocol works, numbers like the debt ratio change constantly, so check a live source before relying on any figure.
