A few years ago, I read the first two volumes of The Avalon Cycle.

Around the same time, I watched the film The Mists of Avalon. I was also very interested in Arthurian legend, which I was just discovering.

After reading those first two volumes, I took a break, even though I already had the last two volumes in my possession. I wanted to take the time to digest what I’d learnt. Now that some time has passed, I’m returning to it to read volumes 3 and 4 and thus bring the Avalon Cycle to a close.

Il y a quelques années, j'avais lu les 2 premiers tomes du Cycle d'Avalon.

A la même époque, j'avais regardé le film Les Brumes d'Avalon. Je m'intéressais aussi beaucoup à la légende arthurienne, que je découvrais.

Après avoir lu ces 2 premiers tomes, j'ai fait une pause, même si j'avais déjà, en ma possession, les 2 derniers tomes. Je voulais prendre le temps de digérer les informations acquises. Maintenant que le temps s'est écoulé, j'y reviens pour lire les tomes 3 et 4 et ainsi clore le cycle d'Avalon.

I really enjoyed immersing myself once again in this story and its atmosphere, which I found soothing, despite the occasional battle scene.

At the start of the volume, Marion Zimmer Bradley introduces the various characters we will encounter as the story unfolds, specifying whether they are historical figures and/or whether they died before the story begins. There is also an index of place names, listing the Latin names alongside their modern English equivalents.

There is also a map showing the main towns and the names of various peoples.
For example, Avalon is said to be the present-day Glastonbury. In fact, I think Avalon is a bit like Atlantis; we don’t know exactly where it was. Several locations have been suggested, but none can be confirmed with 100% certainty.

J'ai beaucoup apprécié me replonger dans cette histoire, cette atmosphère, que j'ai trouvée apaisante, malgré quelques combats racontés.

En début de tome, Marion Zimmer Bradley détaille les différents personnages que nous rencontrerons u fil des pages, en précisant s'il s'agit de personnages historiques et/ou s'ils sont morts avant le début de l'histoire. Il y a également un index des noms de lieux, avec le nom en latin et l'actuelle dénomination en anglais.

Il y a aussi une carte avec les principales villes et les noms de différents peuples.
Par exemple, Avalon serait l'actuel Glastonbury. En fait, je pense qu'Avalon est un peu comme l'Atlantide, on ne sait pas exactement où cela se trouvait. Plusieurs endroits sont proposés pour leur emplacement, sans jamais en être certain à 100%.

Volume 3 begins in the year 96 AD, when the Romans landed in England, whilst savage tribes, such as the Picts, allied themselves with one ruler rather than another, depending on the terms offered.

The future priestesses and druids of Avalon followed a well-structured apprenticeship, and it was not uncommon for a Lady of Avalon to visit a ruler, even a Roman one, to support him in battle and tend to his wounds.

I’m moving straight on to reading Volume 4, the final instalment.

Le tome 3 commence en l'an 96 après Jésus-Christ, quand les Romains débarquent en Angleterre, alors que des tribus sauvages, telles que les Pictes, s'allient à un souverain plutôt qu'à l'autre, selon les conditions proposées.

Les futures prêtresses et les futurs druides d'Avalon suivaient un apprentissage bien structuré et il n'était pas rare qu'une Dame d'Avalon se rende auprès d'un souverain, fût-il romain, pour l'épauler lors de ses combats et lui porter des soins.

Je poursuis directement avec la lecture du tome 4, le dernier.
