We’re on Netflix for this American sci-fi film, which has just arrived on the platform and runs for 2 hours and 13 minutes.

Synopsis :

In 2055, American society had integrated artificial intelligence to make people’s lives easier. That same year, a nuclear warhead exploded in Los Angeles, caused by an AI created by the Americans.

Intelligent androids had also been created and were known as ‘simulants’.

Following the explosion, the government decided to eradicate all AI systems and androids, with the help of their spacecraft, the USS Nomad, capable of surgical targeting and firing missiles.

The majority of the ‘simulants’ have gathered in New Asia (from northern India to Japan).

In 2065, Sergeant Joshua Taylor has been living there for several years with his pregnant wife, Maya. He is still in contact with the Americans, but Maya is unaware of this.

When a US commando unit lands on the beach next to Joshua’s house without warning, he is forced to choose sides. His mission was to find Nirmata (meaning ‘creator’ in Nepali), the architect of an AI and a formidable weapon. Working undercover, he was slowly following a lead, but apparently this wasn’t fast enough for the US government.

He must now continue his mission and neutralise the weapon as soon as he finds it.

The androids replicate the bodies and faces of people who once lived.

Maya had died during the commando operation whilst trying to escape, but to convince Joshua to carry out his mission, the Americans show him videos featuring a woman who bears a striking resemblance to Maya and appears to be in good health.

Joshua agrees to help his homeland, the USA, to neutralise this notorious weapon, in order to save human lives.

As the story unfolds, Joshua realises that actions speak louder than words and that the most humane people are not necessarily those we expect them to be.

En 2055, la société américaine a intégré l'intelligence artificielle pour faciliter la vie des humains. Cette même année, une ogive nucléaire explose à Los Angeles, à cause d'une IA créée par les Américains.

Des androïdes intelligents avaient aussi été créés et sont appelés des "simulants".

Suite à l'explosion, le gouvernement décide d'éradiquer toutes les IA et androïdes, avec l'aide de leur vaisseau spatial l'USS Nomad, capable de cibler de façon chirurgicale et tirer des missiles.

La majorité des "simulants" se sont réunis en Nouvelle Asie (du Nord de l'Inde jusqu'au Japon).

En 2065, le sergent Joshua Taylor vit là-bas, depuis quelques années, avec son épouse Maya, enceinte. Il est toujours en relation avec les Américains, mais Maya l'ignore.

Quand un commando US débarque sur la plage, à côté de la maison de Joshua sans l'avoir prévenu, celui-ci va devoir choisir son camp. Il avait pour mission de trouver Nirmata (créateur en népalais), qui est l'architecte d'une IA et d'une arme redoutable. Sous couverture, il remontait doucement une piste, mais ce n'était pas assez rapide pour le gouvernement US, apparemment.

Il doit maintenant poursuivre sa mission et neutraliser l'arme dès qu'il l'aura trouvée.

Les androïdes copient les corps et visages d'humains ayant existé.

Maya était morte pendant l'opération commando, lorsqu'elle a tenté de s'échapper, mais pour convaincre Joshua de mener sa mission, les Américains montrent, à Joshua, des vidéos sur lesquelles on voit une femme ressemblant énormément à Maya et qui semble être en bonne santé.

Joshua acceptera d'aider sa patrie, les USA, pour neutraliser cette fameuse arme, afin de sauver des vies humaines.

Au fil de l'histoire, Joshua constatera que les actes en disent davantage que les paroles et que les plus humains ne sont pas forcément ceux qu'on croit.

We really enjoyed this film, which portrays AI as more ‘friendly’ than is usually the case. It’s a tool, a form of assistance, and if it’s programmed correctly, it’s beneficial to humanity.

and direction by Gareth Edwards (Monsters in 2010, Godzilla in 2014, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story in 2016). Gareth Edwards is joined by Chris Weitz on the screenplay.

We were pleasantly surprised by this film which, for once, doesn’t portray the United States as the great saviours.

Nous avons bien aimé ce film, qui rend l'IA plus "friendly" que ce que l'on en entend habituellement. C'est un outil, une assistance et si c'est bien programmé, c'est bénéfique pour l'Homme.

Nous avons été agréablement surpris par ce film qui, pour une fois, ne présente pas les Etats-Unis comme les grands sauveurs.
