The King's Valets
London, 1696. Disguised as a boy since childhood in order to receive an education, Mary keeps wearing men's clothes when she is forced to fend for herself after the murder of her mother. Fate seems determined to hound her when the ship on which she has found refuge is attacked by privateers.
Yet it is her destiny that is decided that day. Falling under the spell of Claude de Forbin, the captain, she discovers the thrill of duels — both at sea and in matters of the heart...
But her feminine nature prevents her from remaining aboard the ship. It is at the court of King Jacques, in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, that her adventures will continue.
Court intrigues and conspiracies unfold, yet Mary never loses sight of her goal: to uncover the secret of a pendant she stole from her uncle.
It will lead her much farther than she could ever have imagined.
Synopsis :
Mary Jane is a young girl who lives with her mother, Cecily, moving from one inn to another, depending on how much money Cecily has managed to earn, either as a chambermaid or as a prostitute.
Mary had an older brother, Mary Oliver, who, sadly, has passed away.
Mary Oliver’s father was called John Read. He was the youngest son of a wealthy London shipowner. To be with Cecily, despite his parents’ disapproval, John gave up his privileges and joined the navy to provide for his new family. One day, he never returned from his voyage at sea.
When John’s father dies, Cecily realises that an opportunity has arisen for Mary, who has already got into the habit of passing herself off as a boy, calling herself Mary Oliver after her late brother. Cecily therefore tries her luck with Lady Read, asking her to agree to Mary ‘Oliver’ receiving an education worthy of the Read name. Lady Read agrees, but Tobias Read, John’s elder brother, has no intention of sharing his inheritance with his nephew.
What’s more, John Read had entrusted a pendant to Cecily, who in turn had given it to Mary … in case anything happened to her. As Mary was very resourceful, agile and particularly skilled at fencing, according to her teacher, she would always manage to get herself out of trouble and escape. This pendant was part of a key, the various components of which had to be brought together for it to work.
Mary found refuge with the widow of a former shipowner in London, but then had to flee once more and made her way to France, where further adventures awaited her.
My opinion /Mon avis :
I really enjoyed this story and I can’t wait to start the second volume, which I already have.
It’s a two-volume series and I was lucky enough to find the second volume as a second-hand paperback.
I’d found the first volume in a book box near my old home.
This first part helped me familiarise myself with nautical terms (parts of a ship, crew members, different roles and trades) and pirate terminology. I’ll need to look into all this in more depth, though, so that I can use some of it in my next novel.
So I’m starting volume 2 this very evening!
Happy reading, and see you soon,
Florence
